What's your favorite roguelike?
Which Shiren is best for newcomers
I have played like 40 rogulieks and haven't beaten a single one. What am I doing wrong?
Even the one in OP I can't get past like the 3rd floor
>>715342735The newest one in OP picrel has the best QoL, the most content, everything, best one.
>>715343121I'll definitely pick it up sometime then. Thanks
>>715342686 (OP)I like PMD the best. Its fun having moves and attack instead of just having one basic attack
>>715342820Well each roguelike has a lot of nuances, I might not be able to give quick and dirty rundown but I will try. Roguelikes generally have a lot of upfront learning to do, and they set loose immediately in a trial by fire. You will likely have a bad time for a while until you get the fundamentals down. Roguelikes tend to play around with those, and sneak in new things to learn as you proceed. Just be persistent and be willing to experiment and remember everything and you will eventually develop a knack for these games.
>>715343259Pokemon Mystery Dungeon are some really cool games, I find them to be a bit too story heavy though, and the stories are very uninteresting and you have to sit through all of it. Shiren experimented with abilities too, but I didn't really like it. In Shiren 4 & 5 there's a day night cycle and at night you're forced to essentially play PMD until it's day time, I found it more frustrating than enjoyable, after all Shiren's spin on that is very difficult.
i dont recommend anything modern because they are abusing this genre by cheaping out on content. i was so burnt by the new lost in random game because there is absolutely 0 run to run variety.
>>715343416Yeah I really didn't like the day night system. Most of the moves one shot enemies and it was more about trying not to run out of them. After a while I found it better to just sit in a corner and wait it out.
>>715342686 (OP)Explorers of Sky
I did not expect to feel for Bidoof
but feels were felt
Talloon/Torneko's great adventure on snes
>>715342686 (OP)used to be ADOM until I actually got around to finishing it
made me disillusioned to the genre as a whole
I do like the shiren games though with the second one on the N64 being my favorite
>>715342735this
>>715344108its probably the best roguelike for newcomers, and when you beat it you get a more traditional hardcore roguelike campaign
I really enjoyed etrian mystery dungeon. I never played the 2nd one, but I heard it was so abhorrent that we'll never get another one.
The first one was kino though as an enjoyer of the etrian odyssey series in general.
>>715344442your first mistake was getting hit
your second mistake was thinking melee is viable
your third mistake was playing ADOM
>>715344963>your first mistake was getting hitMelee in roguelikes usually boils down to trading hits.
>your second mistake was thinking melee is viableMelee need to be viable in every medieval fantasy RPG.
Also if melee isn't viable, then why are half of the weapons melee and half of the armors melee coded and half of th enemies melee fighters?
>>715345259Meme game.
Roguelike + ultra realism does not work.
>>715345298Pretty sure you are trolling, but if that's true, ADOM would be a shit game.
>>715345538Roguelite fake-roguelike casual normie dudebro tranny kike slop.
YWNBAR
You wiill never be a roguelike!
>>715342686 (OP)Izuna is my wife.
>>715344252The best first mystery dungeon game for newcomers is actually Baroque.
Just don't play the Wii version.
Bought Rift Wizard 1/2 recently because one of you recommended it.
Already put 70 hours over both games and they're probably my favourite roguelike now.
>>715342686 (OP)I recently bought the android version of Shiren 5, It's easily the best way to play this game. It sucks that you have to go through so many hoops to get it.
>>715348621it's on the PS Vita too, and the Switch
>>715349346I'm not pulling out a switch on my daily commute
>>715349704lot of thieves in your area?
>>715345538this is the best roguelike in terms of combos animations and characters but it's short and too easy imo
Probably Elona. Elin is too focused on crafting autism and town building to be as enjoyable for me
>>715342686 (OP)I'm still kicking myself for not getting the physical edition.
>>715343259PMD annoys me a bit because the fundamentals of being a Pokemon x Mystery Dungeon crossover peaked with Explorers, and every game after muddies the water. Wiiware had the game be defined by the tower system, Gates cutting most of the roster creating less enemy variety, but Super's especially frustrating since it tries to be more gameplay-oriented to the point of also incorporating some usual MD-isms without considering the consequences of adding those to a Pokemon-styled game.
>the break system, which was meant to encourage teambuilding, ends up strongholding who you want to use since anyone can be unusable at any given time>this can be bypassed by going into a dungeon and immediately giving up, causing the ingame days to pass, making it pointless tedium for the sake of>enemies in dungeons with meta progression tend to be inflated statwise so you get instagibbed if you let them do anything, and will also prioritize range making mons without ranged attacks sitting ducks>to counter this, the game gives you wands (paralleling Shiren's staffs) but due to how good their abilities are, the game devolves into spamming wands to get the broken enemies off your back instead of actually engaging with any of the Pokemon moves and mechanics>IQ skills and dual abilities, which were originally used in PMD to give almost every mon a unique role, are gutted, leading to many species being homogenized and redundant.>the Connection Orb system preventing species dupes means experimenting with team builds is also harder, since you now have to change a character's move setup and ability back and forth rather than getting a second one to use for a different purpose. Especially egregious with Pokemon like Smeargle.>Level 1 dungeons are now Level 5, but Pokemon levelup pools are so bloated now move-wise that getting the right kit for these dungeons relies on RNG rolling the right one for you for a good chunk of the cast.At least Shiren's still solid.
>>715342686 (OP)Elona. Considering that I've been playing it for at least 15 years now I can't give any other answer.
>>715345727I actually owned that game, but never finished it because I couldn't figure out what the hell was happening half the time.
Shiren 6 was so fun. Felt better balanced than 5, in that once you obtained the "keys to a run," the game plays out much more consistently. And it felt like you found the "keys" themselves more consistently, too. One of things that annoys me in this genre is the feeling of helplessness when you're 1/3 through a dungeon haven't come across anything that can improve your chances of success. Even 6 has a couple dungeons like that, like the DLC one based off the ultimate dungeon in the 1st Shiren game, which makes most of the awesome runes and new features unavailable.
Anyway, I've been itching to get back to it. Got about 230 hours in it. I could stand to play some more 5 again, too, when it's not destroying my ass.
>>715343259I feel like PMD ends up becoming about levelling up to clear everything but post game, which is really lame. The item game tends to be really weak, too.
>>715342735I've only played 5 and 6, but 5 has some very nice tutorials/puzzle maps. But some of the mechanics like night suck.
6 felt a bit lacking in properly explaining everything but overall feels like a better game.
>>715342686 (OP)My recent favorites are:
Gnollhack
Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Jupiter Hell
Ftk1/2
Dropped ancient domains of faggotry, shiten the wanderer 1 snes, and will probably drop caves of qud
>>715355145I don't think you're going to get people to support the games your discord friends made by shitting on the games they like.
>>715353241You should go back to it, it's pretty cool. The way you need to figure out what's going on and how to progress helps get people into the mindset of doing multiple runs and not clinging too hard to items, each one lasts just long enough with enough variability to be fun, though the game itself can be very short if you know what to do. The only tips I'll give are to talk to everyone, throw your items at people, and going into the tower progresses time.
>>715342820look at why you died and dont do it again. ran out of food? learn to be more efficient with movement or (if the game has corpse eating) which corpses to eat. getting hit too much? learn how to move to avoid getting hit. youre prabably not identifying consumables fast enough so figure out or look up how to do so.
>>715355145shattered pixel dungeon is the perfect game for the toilet at work. long term strategy for each run is easy to remember but the levelgen keeps it interesting.
Is Siralim ultimate considered a roguelike or autismmaxing?
Haven't found any I've liked more
I don't like that the new Shiren removed tons of features and the excuse was "back to the roots"
