I recently went to a retro gaming event and was struck by how unpleasant everything was.
I tried several cartridge based retro consoles. The controllers are terrible to hold and the buttons felt so bad. The games are terrible and way too difficult for their simplistic nature. The old CRT TVs gave me headaches and were very uncomfortable on the eyes.
It's crazy to think that people had such a bad gaming experience was the normal and acceptable back then.

Games suck. Retro games were heavily limited by their hardware and lack of general knowledge about making good gameplay, controls, etc. Because the cost of adding content back then was very high, the games used high difficulty to pad gameplay time so you feel like the game was worth the money/hour of play time.
But it's not like nowadays games are much better. The technology changed and the problems they have changed as well, but 99% of games is still trash not worth playing, it never changed.
But if you look hard enough, you might find something that fits your needs in any era.
