Here's your problem. Give me 2-3 sidequests that upgrade my inventory capacity in one lump sum each. Zelda only needs granular collectibles for health and maybe one line of upgrades per game, and those upgrades are still given out at 2 or 3 lump sum milestone points rather than whenever you turn in the game's unique collectible.

It's an incestuous, overly smoothed out idea of "freedom" that's overly informed by how other video games have trained players to see player choice. Freedom is bad when I become "free to explore" like 90% of the game world, all at once, by unlocking a single mechanic. It makes the world feel smaller to know that it was all designed such that I won't get overpowered or skip a step no matter what way I go. There has to be an order for going out of order to be satisfying, just making my own order in something that doesn't try to enforce one isn't any fun.
