Dawn if War 1 despite being warhammers is probably by far the best and most accessible modern example.

AoE empires 2 is a good one to start with, as it has one of the best campaigns to teach you be the bare basics, and plenty of single player to keep you going.

My personal favorites of Supcom (Supreme commander), and at the moment, I'm having a lot of fun playing BAR (Beyond all reason) on and off with friends since it's basically Total annihilation, which I loved as a kid. Buy I don't recommned BAR to someone just starting out on RTS's since it doesn't really do the best job teaching you the basic stuff, unless you have a few friends willing to take the time to do so.

If you want something a bit different, I enjoyed battle fleet gothic 2. Not really what people think of when they say "RTS", but I count it as one and it has a fun campaign.

What.
Like how? Was it just ADHD or did you just not understand something?

I went back to play C&C 3 after a decade and thought, damn some of these missions are almost impossible to beat, I dont remember it being this hard. I'm not an APM god but I'm good enough at RTS to beat any campaign. Come to find out there was some "balancing" patch catered to the online meta, so now the campaign balance is completely off.

It depends on if you mean multiplayer or not. If you're just going to have fun with the campaigns then there is a huge variety of options from you to pick from: CNC, Red Alert, Starcraft, Warcraft, AOE, Deserts of Kharak, dawn of war, etc. All of them are different (even within each franchise games tend to be wildly different mechanically), so you can pick and choose depending on your preferred style and preferred aesthetic.

Obviously multiplayer is going to be stratified by the big ones and if you hop right into 1v1 you are going to be in for a tough time; however, even if you hop on broodwar with the koreans and just play some 3v3s or BGH you will have fun as a complete beginner.
