We had multiple episodes of Aang having to learn that he couldn't take the childish and naive cowardly way of praying everything will work out okay by itself, and actually having to step in. And it's all taken away by a Deus Ex Tortuga.

Aang did not have to abandon his childish stupidity, and he still reaped all of the rewards. Meanwhile when they made a mistake in the Zuko/Katara vs Azula fight, they were punished. Aang didn't even have to beat Ozai, the tiny rock did it for him by activating auto-pilot mode. The plotline was also very obviously set-up for the kill, they just backtracked due to pressure not allowing that on a children's cartoon.

I'm not saying the transition of power wouldn't be messy but we would not see people scrambling to put back in place a man who stetched thin the resources and manpower of his nation. Had some decent writing. Seasons 1 to 3 were still pretty flawed in regards to world building and the morality of the world but nonetheless the show had some nice characters and designs. They also did really well the main relationship of two of the protagonists Rayla and Callum.
Then everything went to shit with the seasons 4 to 7 were they did a time skip, made the main couple break up in a comic and didn't explain it in the show, made Rayla unable to actually apologize to Callum for what she did to him and actually had her double down on her shitty behavior and had Callum be the one to have to apologize to her for being angry.
No idea what happened for this change but I believe in the theory that after Aaron was accused of misogyny he silently step down and let the new female head writer Devon handle everything and push her agenda
