I could easily imagine someone from the 90s moving from the original mario to playing mario bros wonder, its different but its an evolution of mario, but I can't imagine someone from the 90s playing sonic frontiers or sonic x shadow

Sonic to Sonic Mania which is an evolution of Classic Sonic if that's all you care about when it comes to the series. Possibly also adding Superstars but the thing that keeps me from replaying that more frequently like I would with Mania is the boss fights, even if I do enjoy the stages themselves.

Even Sonic Adventure is shit to me. I don't care about any of these games. Sonic Mania was fine, but it just felt like retreading on the same ground.

It depends on what you mean by "people from the 90s".
I know a few people who grew up playing the NES mario games when they were still current but they lost interest in videogames as they got older.
Now they'll play Mario 1 or 3 for a few minutes out of nostalgia but they couldn't give a shit about any game they didn't grow up with.
