The 3DS is great because you can just pick up and play for a few minutes here and there and stuff like JRPGS you can just get an hour or so in before bed.

shit like the switch or steamdeck are not pocket-sized so they're basically "portable console" instead of "gaming handheld"

The 3DS remake of DQVII is a lot shorter than the original. Took me around 56 hours to finish, iirc. But I didn't grind to fight the post game boss.
At one hour per day, you'll finish it in two months. If you want more DQ afterwards, remember that all the 3DS Monster games have complete english patches.

i prefer my phone for that kind of thing. a couple of roguelikes have mobile ports, some crpgs have 3rd party engines and winlator works for most other turn-based low resolution games. no need for a handheld if its gonna have a small screen and only be played for an hour or so per session.

I think I only got a small handful last time I went to one, sadly. You can still get that feeling somewhat by using one of the methods of playing a game like Mario Kart online and get a bunch of miis at the gate, if I recall. Or use the service that lets you do streetpass over the internet in simulated areas.
