While Sonic isn't just about "fast", "fast" is an important part of his identity and Mario 64 just doesn't have that. So, your suggestion is either fucking terrible or you made such a gigantic reasoning leap, skipping over all the design decisions a developer would have to make, that it's worthless anyway.

b.) no one wants Sonic to be Mario design or physics

sonic sucks in 3d because the hardware literally cant keep up. only now it finally can with the power of the ssd, x3d cpus, and all that innovation but sega will always cater to the lowest common denominator which is mobile/switch.

>no one wants Sonic to be Mario design or physics
The original creators designed Sonic by speedrunning the first level of Mario 1-1 over and over again. It does have Mario in its DNA, and I'm sure Sonic Adventure borrowed from Mario 64 at the time. But you gotta realize Sonic Adventure came out in 98, the same year of Ocarina of Time. So it was still pretty fresh at the time, 3D platforming was in its infancy. It's a shame they've resorted to sidelining 3D sonic into these narrow corridors with boosting being the primary focus.

The emphasis was on muh speed is what killed Sonic in the jump to 3D. If autists just accepted Sonicโ€™s speed as a character trait rather than something that must be implemented into gameplay, the franchise would be better off. Like imagine if 3D Mario was JUST about jumping on shit instead of being a 3D platformer? The franchise would be in ruins

But most sonic adventure levels allow you to backtrack pretty far. Maybe you're thinking of Sonic Adventure 2 which had far more linear level design. Sonic Adventure had sprawling open hub areas that you could run around like crazy. Yes, each one was segmented into blocks, but it was quite impressive on the hardware at the time and ran just great. Most game engines actively cull what is outside of the viewing angle of the player, optimizations have just changed since then to allow games to be more open. You could definitely have an open world sonic game and plenty of fangames have implemented it with ease on much weaker hardware.

>sonic is about le boosting and going fast fast fast mach speed
Every game (and fangame) does this and it's why Sonic is still shit because then all you do is hold up on the joystick. Being "fast" isn't about having a high speed cap. It's about preserving momentum. Mario is fun because he has lots of moves that keep him at top speed and avoid obstacles. The concept is the same but Sonic can bounce, roll down slopes and curves, wall-run, run-on-water, etc. Lots of potential to feel different. Maybe he can be a *little* faster than Mario but not too much.

The label of "fastest-thing-alive" killed Sonic. The original 2D games never made him that fast.

I just wanted to know why all marble games are so bad. It's all based on frustration based on precision, or solving stupid puzzles.
I just wanted a game where you are a ball, but you can move quickly and have to use physics and the terrain to your advantage to go fast.

Was I ever making a comparison, NIGGER? No. I want to FIX sonic and to do that you have to CHANGE it.

All you "Sonic scientists" here claim that Sonic gameplay has a certain style, but I don't think he ever HAD a style (talking strictly 3D here). Most of the time you just hold up or get forced on some rail or boost pad or home on enemies. And the few times they let you do anything, it's buggy as hell. They clearly suck at implementing real pinball wall running physics so they just railroad you.

They should give him an equivalent of a walljump (maybe like sideways ball bounce). Give him some kind of dive or air-kick to gain some height. Even in Adventure 2 he had a bounce bracelet that bounced higher consecutively. That's sorta like a triple jump, but levels are never designed for it. It's this kind of nuance that makes platforming fun. But all you Sonicfags think is best for Sonic is to just hold up on the joystick and put him on a rollercoaster. Cuz I guess that's "Sonic's identity. That's how it's always been!" FUCK YOU.

You know what game had some of this shit? Sonic ADVANCE. Yeah, they let you do tricks in the air to alter your momentum. Do the 3D games do this? NO, of course not.

I didn't mean that Sonic should be JUST Mario 64, but fundamentally he is what all 3D platformers should be built on. It's hard to explain in detail but there's a lot about SM64 that makes a good baseline. He has good turning, speed (sonic could be a bit faster), flips, wallkicks, air kicks, dives. You can't accelerate in mid-air and turn on a dime (which is why a lot of these Sonic games are broken because you can too easily jump over the whole level) It's all calibrated to near perfection. So the point is to just add to this with some unique Sonic moves like ball mode and air-tricks.

You just identified the problem of 3D Sonic games often railroading you and not utilizing or having good physics and then instead of saying this should be fixed came up with a solution to a separate "problem" that doesn't exist. Sonic doesn't need a walljump or a double jump, or flips or dives. This sort of stuff is geared for collectathon games anyway. The Classic games already gave Sonic a solid foundation for translating into 3D, which turned up a few great levels in Sonic Adventure with Red Mountain and Speed Highway. They always shoulf have just continued with those kinds of stages as a base.
>But all you Sonicfags think is best for Sonic is to just hold up on the joystick and put him on a rollercoaster.
That isn't true at all.

Listen you stupid nigger ape, while the tricks were cool it was a bandaid solution to the gba having a fuck tiny screen
The adventure and even boost games expect you to make smart use of the levels themselves.
Quite literally you're the retard who shits whines and complains about sonic games "not being real 3d" and being incapable of doing most of the time trials of adventure 1 and 2
