Although the curator is very much a projection/avatar of the real Renoir that escaped from his prison underneath the Monolith. Thanks to Clea's efforts to weaken Aline/The Paintress by witholding her chroma.

but that can't be true because the fragment you meet on the forsaken battlefield is actually addressing Alicia and asking her if she got her memories back, which a memory of Clea couldn't have the context for since Clea did not enter the canvas after Alicia went in. It's also unlikely that a "memory" of Aline would either since Alicia's arrival is relatively recent...

Clea did enter and leave the painting at various time periods, she's seen leaving it right at the start of Alicia's epilogue.
Some of the memories that the faded people speak off are old while others more recent.
The Faded boy in the Painting Workshop talks about how the creature locked away there is something that gave him nightmares, most likely just Clea teasing Verso while they were kids.
Meanwhile the boy in the Ancient Sanctuary talks about how many expeditions have passed through, while the one in Yellow Harvest laments how the giant Nevrons are eating the mountains Clea and Verso painted together in the canvas way back when.

I suppose fragments of soul would be a better way to describe the faded people, some planted earlier than others.

So I was wondering how much to explore as well and I saw a reddit post saying "you should rush the main quest or otherwise you will overlevel and 1shot everything."
Well I did that and I got an excellent fight for the final boss.
And I also missed all the fucking side content, which is really good and will impact how you see the end of the game and make it much more gut wrenching.
It's damned if you do damned if don't, so my rec is to get all the gradient attacks and do all the obvious large pieces of optional content, then when you go finish the game just put the max damage limiter back on.

Yeah, act 3 is basically all side content and super bosses. The pictos and wepons that you find during the final level are only about 1-2 levels higher than the ones in the Monolith.
I did all of the side content before the final stage, so for me the final boss ended up getting deleted instantly.
Getting all gradient attacks does require you to go to the Reacher, which is a higher level area than the final level, though it shouldn't leave you too overpowered.
Endless Tower, Flying Manor and Renoir's Drafts are the highest level areas in the game. Doing them before the final boss will make you OP, but they are mandatory to piece the story together.
