The concept is sound, but they're almost always made by shitty manufacturers that do a fuckawful job assembling it.

Gold HDMI cables are similarly priced to the regular ones
there's a good chance you could pick one up off the shelf and not think about it

It's largely irrelevant for digital signals, but older analog connections benefited from it. I still use gold plated banana plugs for my speakers.
