There isn't inherently anything wrong with it and yes, it comes with a sense of freedom. But too much freedom can be a bad thing. A lot of times they bloat up the map with a lot of empty and dull spaces that serve 0 purpose outside of padding the runtime, so to speak.
There's a middle ground to be found, certain games utilize a somewhat open and explorable spaces without being a massive boring map. Linear and shorter games shouldn't be looked down on, there's still a space for those. Not every game has to be a 100+ hr slog. Especially shit like having certain areas gatekept by a certain ability, only to force you back into previously explored areas sucks balls. Sometimes, you just want a tightly focused shorter experience. A game like Sifu for example clearly wouldn't work with an open world.
Claiming only open world games are only worth playing is just a very limited perspective and outright silly.
