It was the last time America was truly "free" and people could move Westward with the hope of making a new life for themselves. You could do just about anything if you were daring or ambitious enough.

"Wild" West elicits the ultimate liberty to do whatever the fuck you want, be the lawful sherriff committed to decent duty or be the black horse bandit raping dumb bar maids and lacerate them with a steam engine. Nature itself is an obvious motif that I won't explain. Add the juxtaposition of the rapidly emerging new complex technology such as revolving pocket sized firearms with the traditional such as quilted handmades and hand rolled tobacco. Idk what else to say. How about we ask why you DON'T like it?

I think a real open ended outlaw game would be cool and hasn't really been done yet. RDR2 is story heavy and all your NPC allies are immortal cinematic characters with plot armor. You follow the caravan around going from movie scene to movie scene and nobody dies unless the scripted event comes.
I think there would be great potential in something like a civil war era outlaw game where you can opportunistically benefit from the turmoil of war, recruit bushwhackers and deserters, have faction reputations with both sides of the war, use soldier disguises and so on. Maybe not just randomly generated NPCs either, but unique followers that can die like companions in New Vegas on hardcore mode.

I like the aesthetics and the ingenuity of a lot of turn of the century small-arms design, much of what was sold and used in the west was decades ahead of what militaries of the time were fielding, albeit many of these ideas would ultimately be abandoned.

It's like getting a little preview into hundreds of possible futures that were never were.

Based vaquero moment. Most western depictions just whitewash the entire cowboy aesthetic and pretend it all sprang out of nowhere in 1860. Meanwhile, Mexican horsemen had already been running cattle and fighting bandits for a century by then. The spurs, lassos, saddles-literally all lifted from the Mexican/Spanish traditions. Even the term โ€œbuckarooโ€ is just a bastardization of โ€œvaquero.โ€ American frontier roleplay wouldnโ€™t exist without that influence.

karl may's western books had a cult status in the eastern block (including east germany). however the writer himself never visited the wild west. these books (and the movies based on them) are also very injun centric. they still have festivals in germany where they dress up and larp as indians, it's funny.

Even most of the specifics of the usual "cowboys" depiction are of Spanish origins since the late middle ages and the reconquista of arid regions of the Iberian peninsula from moops.

That is like saying there is no reason to ever make a Western movie after The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.
Like sure, RDR2 is the best in its genre, but you can ALWAYS tell a new story with new characters.
There were good westerns after Stagecoach. There were good westerns after The Searchers. There were good westerns after The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. There were good westerns after True Grift. There were good westerns after Lonesome Dove, Unforgiven, Tombstone, etc. There will be a good western after RDR2.

It's a combination of wilderness and civilization, that can feel steam punk without being Victorian drek. It's not woke, full of dudebros, and the west felt deliberate, purposeful.

Since the spaghetti western fixed what Hollywood broke with their gay singsong garbage, the western has been a great era for movies and games.

Pre-industrial America passed too fast, and felt too honest.

There wasn't but many cultures have had their own version of riders, outlaws and highwaymen.

It sits at the threshold between the last time the world was old and the dawn of the modern age. Its the last period you can set a fantasy setting in. The last time the world was entirely analog. New things were rapidly on the horizon. A person born in 1880 could live to see both a world without electric refrigeration and man walking on the moon. It is the single most dynamic period of change in recent memory.

>you do realize there has never been a single recorded duel taking place during the "wild west"
Why would you assert with such confidence something that can be so easily disproven? There are multiple examples of famous Old West "duels", where one party specifically called out the other and then they both drew pistols and shot at each other. The Hickok-Tutt shootout, the Short-Courtright duel, and the Long Branch Saloon gunfight are just some examples. There is also the O.K. Corral, though that was between two parties rather than two individuals. There are also the two Jim Leavy duels (a third attempted, but the opponent in that case was smarter and ambushed Leavy before the duel) and two Tom Carberry duels.
The movies didn't make that shit up, it just wasn't the usual outcome. Usually, the guy would just fucking shoot you rather than risk a duel where you might be faster.

You've also got bows, tomahawks, sabers, breech-loaders, bolt-actions, Gatling guns, cannons, and so on. And there are a lot of wacky experimental weapons from the time period as well, like chain rifles, harmonica pistols, Howdahs, and so on. And you've got all kinds of different mobile firing and mounting positions like horseback, stagecoach, train, steamship, and so on yet again. And there's a lot of variety in all those categories.

But boo hoo, baby doesn't get his assault rifle with a holographic sight, so it's all boring shit, I guess.

Well, basically, the northeast of Brazil is a giant arid shithole. Back during that time, the whole day area was pretty much ruled by "Coronels", who were basically Manorial Oligarchs who ran the country like slavedrivers. Voting was public, so they could literally kill you for voting for the wrong person.

Anyway, it was poor as shit and generally horrible, so obviously you ended up having bandits who went around making things even worse. They were known as "Cangaรงeiros" and they were some wacky ass clothing

The most famous of them was 'Lampiรฃo' or "Lamplight" (I believe this is because he was said to shoot so fast his gun looked like a lamp) who had a big gang that went around butchering and robbing people for a long time until the government had to send in the army to take them out with machine guns, armored cars and all sorts of stuff.

it's okay. it's a roguelite and twinstick shooter. if that appeals to you, get it. it technically has an end point, a final boss, but it made me mad and i dropped it because after you "beat" it they ask you to clear it a second time to clear the story but don't make any meaningful changes to the second clear that make it more interesting/more difficult. cool art style, though. ron perlman is the voice actor for the player character and constantly monologues, don't know if that is a plus or a minus for you. i generally like perlman in his roles but i cannot stop thinking about "YO DONNY" whenever i hear him now.

Cowboy implies individual freedom. Cartel rule is nowhere close to that.

It's "Cowboys and Outlaws" not "Outlaws and Outlaws and Outlaws and Outlaws"

what I'd really want to see is a proto western game, that separates itself from the movie tropes. This has been done in film and literature:
>Butcher's Crossing
>Lonesome Dove
>Cormac McCarthy's stuff
>Meek's Crossing
>The Revenant
>First Cow
for some reason vidya is still mostly stuck with bang bang pew pew.
They need to make either a Oregon trail adventure survival game with some telltale games style characters ('85 game is too old).
Or a game about beaver/buffalo hunting in the early 19th.

That was nearly 100 years ago? Crazy. South America is a shit hole beyond comprehension. With trump's Israel shenanigans he can forget to invade Mexico to root out cartels.
>lampiao
Lucky luke brazil, basically.
>coronels
They aren't so different from politicians, are they? Robbing people blind and telling them how they suck.

I'm usually ok with lists like this, but not having Sunset Riders in there is criminal.

More like a mix between Blackbeard and Bonnie and Clyde.

Modern politicians keep their robbing concealed. They don't just hire a bunch of armed goons (Jagunรงos is what they were called) to go around killing and beating. Coronels were direct. They were more akin to feudal lords than politicians.

Sure, politicians use goons to take the money and says this benefits civilization itself (democracy), while, in fact, they are a scourge to our society. Feudal lords might not have been all had, but they certainly as hell were direct, as they more often than not, were warriors.

the age of sail has a Portuguese origin yet its pretty clear the British turned it into something very distinct.
