To be honest, what I think can still improve a lot is physics; stuff like fluids behaving like a distinct physical entities, wetting and pooling over surfaces, having weight to them, etc., or cloths reacting more to the environment, characters and objects.
I feel like it'd both make the game look better, and could have potential use in puzzles and the like.

I know it has been done to some extend, but I feel like it still needs to improve
