One aspect of Hollow Knight I don't see rightfully not praised as uncontestable is its art. It's nice, but I question the breadth of games you experience and/or whether you need glasses if you call it outright better than any other game. Tha backgrounds and details of God of War 2, 3, and Ascension are at least as good, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and SotN have prettier colors, all of these, and most competent games in general, have more interesting character design. I think Yoshi's Island, a game 25 years older, outright looks objectively better. Pic related is what I find to be the best looking area in the game, and even then it bats on par with some of my other favorites, not close to being in a league of its own

Yeah, it's really good. It's so good that's how it got made - it failed to get the Victorian videogame grant but submitted it to the Melbourne Film Board and got a grant on the pure basis of its art instead.

I initially avoided Hollow Knight. Because it had that newgrounds flash animation style. But I eventually got the game, and learned to appreciate the art. I was wrong with my initial assessment. But not by much.

I'll say this about the game: the art utterly and completely draws you in. While playing the game, you are transported into a dank cavern, full of life. It perfectly captures the mood of a subterranean ecosystem. This is in large part due to the sound design. But it's sold in conjunction with the dawn art.

I stand by what I said, Joe. Hollow Knight is not the greatest, it's simply not. Truth hurts, I know it hurts, but that's just how it is sometimes. But you really are a great guy, you know, great guy, wonderful man, he just likes safe things folks. The middle class has great taste, I tell you, and they'll tell you that other games are just as good. Our blue collar workers, they all know art is the full composition and not the detail, the colors and cohesiveness are just as important, truly beautiful yeah

if you dont like it thats ok, you can not like games, but dont just lie about things or pretend things that dont matter should make a game horrible. Who the fuck cares that you only have a single weapon? Why does that effect the quality of the game? The customization comes from the relics you equip, some of which drastically change your gameplay style. Like i feel fucking retarded even trying to entertain any of your ideas because they are just so fucking arbitrarily stupid. Just say you dont like it. Dont be an insecure little cuckold who has to pretend his opinions are facts because you dont feel brave enough to justify how you feel about things.

its what happens when people are too insecure to just be honest about the fact that their opinions come from their feelings and that there is nothing wrong with that. >The customization comes from the relics you equip, some of which drastically change your gameplay style
There are very few that do this and are even half decent. Companions don't break damage thresholds and so make zero difference, are as expensive as the charm that gives you an entire extra spell cast per gauge (33% increase is massive), and one of them messes with your ability to cast spells by siphoning your soul on a timer. You have a bunch of redundant lifeblood charms
>you can stack them
of which stacking takes away all your space for the supposed gameplay-changing charms you talk about and encourages a degenerate facetanking playstyle, and a small variety of more interesting survivability charms that are training wheels designed to be outgrown. Flukenest is the one charm that comes to mind that introduces a truly new mechanic while not dealing such little damage it's not worth using, and even then it costs as much as the charm which increases your swing speed by 33%, which usually translates to a 50-100% DPS increase, because landing 3-4 hits on patterns you'd normally only have an opening for two is insane. There is no reason to ever use the charms that don't directly boost your numbers except for modded bosses and extremely specific self-imposed challenges. I could go on and on about how barren the mechanical core of this game is, like how every movement upgrade is the most generic thing ever and a ripoff of a mechanically richer upgrade from another game (mantis claw and crystal dash are a gay and boring Metroid wall jump and speed booster respectively), but I'd exceed text limit five times over

>>backgrounds in god of war, a game with a completely different style and perspective
Those metrics aren't relevant to the aesthetics, in which the games have comparable focuses, natural terrain and artisan architecture. I love replaying GoW III partially because each area is so distinct. The oppressive grays and ethereal whispy look of dynamic elements of Hades is unique to that area and makes sense contextually. Hollow Knight uses this same general idea as a default setting for several areas and it ends up just being kind of there
>>harmony of dissonance, with its oversaturated GBA palette, has prettier colors
Straight up yeah
>>yoshi's island??? what's the objective metric even?
Distinction in foreground textures and clearly defined backgrounds. Hollow Knight is again just kind of there in the former, and the latter only worked for me in the few areas with vibrant enough colors for its blur on the background to not swirl the elements together in a gray blob. I also found Deepnest fucking ugly except for that part with the broken tram and Herrah/weaver's den, where there was enough exposed area and stuff going on in the foreground for the atmosphere to be gross and decrepit in a good way

music for video games doesnt need to be stand out to be amazing, this is just moving the goal post. Things arent either amazing or bad, if the music doesnt stand out and fits the mood but is otherwise not memorable then its totally fine for some games. my favorite game soundtracks DO stand out, like the Nier, Halo, and Persona series as well as Cyberpunk 2077, but that doesnt mean that games that dont have stand out banger soundtracks are bad. Your view of art is about as low IQ as you are, which is to say extremely low. If you dont like the music thats fine, but its definitely not bad. Its all quite competent music. Especially the final few boss themes, this one is pretty good.

It's not bait, I liked it a lot. It costs more than most metroidvanias though, so if you're interested wait for a sale

>music for video games doesnt need to be stand out
It does need to stand out, for metroidvania games is as integral to the game as the gameplay itself.

Do you think SotN is the genre's role model and flagship just because of the gameplay? Hell no, a lot of its merit goes to the music, the devs knew it and thus why the tile of the game literally tells you that you are in for some good fucking music.

>the OST you posted
>not memorable its totally fine
Unmemorable orchestra slop lmao, thanks for not just proving but actively contributing to my point.

Being a souls like is about gameplay, not setting. And hollow knight is a fucking metroidvania. It does not even have a stamina bar. The only, ONLY thing it shares with dark souls is the currency recovery thing

i wouldn't say that, but hollow knight is indeed cheap on the area differences, with all the fog and blur and recolored filters
wouldn't saying that the areas are too similar to each other sound better?
>HoD
you have a twisted sense of aesthetics, anonymous
did you actually like the garish #ff0000 on an emulator, or the more muted colors on actual GBA or the recolor mod
>backgrounds/foregrounds
works on my machine
you can bring it back to the first point, and how all the areas are structured visually in the same way, but the entities themselves are fairly distinct from the environment excluding deepnest, but that's the point there
the underground setting is somewhat limiting, but it was never "gray blob" bad, especially since the compositing of static backgrounds and animated characters is basically old hannah-barbera-tier

On a DS Lite. Forgotten Crossroads is a big offender with its repeating shell aesthetic, which is more of an "oh shit, we have to fill this space or it'll be NEStroid black" decision than deliberate visual design. There are good areas, like White Palace, where negative space is advantageous to sell scale and is enhanced by the palette, and background details are huge and distinct when present, like the windows or that big tree and its branches

>GBA castlevanias are also oversaturated on DS screen
shit nigga what are you doing
though if we're bitching about visuals, HoD's solution of a true red outline for clarity is also terrible for the intended screen
the superiour GBAvania put more effort into the player character's outline, which makes blue-white soma look nice in a vacuum and also in any environment (even though a lot of areas had the gray castle walls)

This is the type of person who calls others fanboys yet behaves like the rabid fanboy he accuses others being. Latching to 1/3 of the games only said to be better in terms of graphics was by the badcompany. Or even antagonizing the mere offer of a criticism, that another game's graphics was better. The indie fanboy will really believes their average, mediocre even, games like Noita are masterpieces. It's useless to even try telling otherwise. How DARE you say Fez isn't that good. They're stuck in Plato's Cave drooling at Shovel Knight.

Im not going to disagree, its not some god tier when it comes to visuals, but its on the
>good enough
tier, a 7/10, and that good enough if the rest of the game is excellent enough, which i think it is.

When it comes to art design for a game you need to be 2 things
>not ugly
>catch people's attention (not blow them away)
And i think HK achieves this.

Nine Sols shat on Hollow Knight so hard itโ€™s so funny, it showed that the lack of story and characters in souls likes is an excuse for the devs to not put effort in their story and make whatever they want with no rhyme or reason

Silksong will come out and will be the same type of dark soulsy story telling and people will suck its cock and pretend it has a good story

Ori 2 is pretty good as well,
The Messenger is a fun game if you don't fundamentally hate pixelshit, since it actually has quality pixel art
Iconoclasts is pretty linear and babbles on for way too long, but it's very polished and decently fun
Rain World is not really a metroidvania and a big hit or miss game depending on your frustration threshold and affinity for figuring out stuff by yourself, but it is the only game that gave me a feeling of a sprawling giant world like i had with Hollow Knight

I played Nine Sols and enjoyed it had to stop playing because I couldn't beat the final boss. What I don't like is the corpse running mechanic. At least unlike Hollow Knight you don't respawn with half health but due to the way on how much more difficult it is than HK, it makes it so that you pretty much have to focus on dealing with the area you died in, again. And it gets pretty egregious like in certain areas like in the warehouse where you have to wait for the slow containers to move.

In Hollow Knight, it's kind of the opposite problem where it feels so pointless. I hear people say "it's supposed to generate tension and a sense of fear" but it only made me frustrated when I was new to metroidvanias, and when I got good at the game you can just easily rush past the enemies and get back your geos. And you can just quit and reload the game if you think you're going to die.

As somone that likes HK, only point I'd agree with is that the story is non existent and I kind of hate the way Souls like games tell their lore. I didn't really care about the story and lore in HK because of how it's told is so sparsely spread out and theorycrafting and not enough showing. I thought Nine Sols delivered its story, lore and characters MUCH better than HK.
