I know the director sold the studio for a big price, gave horrible advice to new owners with gollum, and then bought it back for pennies, all to avoid bankruptcy, big brain move but still stings that the devil's men was cancelled. hey at least most of the devs that left are making those wet dreams leisure suit larry games.

Anyone played this?
>>715420738I've always been surprised that people aren't even making simple ones with Game Maker and stuff because it already suits people who want less action and more storytelling in games. Like people love Undertale because the "proper" way of playing is to not fight any enemies, well here's a genre that doesn't have to have any fighting at all in it and you just walk around collecting items, doing puzzles, and talking to people. Really bizarre how it dominated PC gaming in the 90s and is so niche now.
>>715423863funny thing is that deponia was made in the point and click genre's equivalent of unity.
nearly every dev team can use the same engine that handles all the tech work.
just make nice art and characters and puzzles and jokes. the story doesnt even need to make sense. it not making sense adds to the charm even. no need to touch the gameplay either, just spice up the puzzles.

>>715424630It's true to the show and has really great voice acting.
There's maybe two really hard puzzles, but one of them made me question how I interact with adventure games because growing up, I thought they were static animations with reactions based on the right interaction. So I try to keep that puzzle in mind when I play others.
>>715424658chinese do these for their fmv dating sims.
sadly they got usability issues.
imagine a timeline of A->B->C->D
now you play from A to D with certain choices.
you go back to A, and play with different choices up to B.
it lets you jump to C and D without finishing B, and go back to B again. and will not tell you what choices are kept.
you can finish B two times with different choices and start C, then jump to start of C using the journal, and you wouldnt know what choices are kept.
every fmv dating sim made by china and korea uses the same engine with this exact issue present in all of them. makes me pull my hair out.

>>715433125I always wondered how much of that very german humor translated to other languages in the first one. The series is also a very interesting case showing the differences between the old crusty lucasarts age and the reborn era. Because the first one uses the old verb system, and they made proper use of that by putting tons of optional lines and jokes into wrong combinations, while the 2nd one uses the modern approach of making the game playing and just having 2 mouse buttons be reactionary to context of what you hover over. Which plays way nicer and smoother but also limits potential for optional lines.

>>715433327>I always wondered how much of that very german humor translated to other languages in the first one.So do I. >>715435218For me, the game wasn't talky enough, as I love talky adventure games, but I could also see if somebody hates characters talking too much, that they'd prefer Full Throttle to other games.
For me, the game is just an interesting piece of history as it's the stepping stone to Grim Fandango, which I consider to be Tim Schafer's masterpiece. If you were there for it's original release, maybe it IS the best adventure game at the time. Hearing the earlier stuff by Peter Mcconnell and being able to pick up on a few cues he'd reuse for Grim Fandango was super cool, and Tim Schafer's writing/comedy chops which he'd refine for GF. For example, Grim Fandango is pretty great at closing character loops/arcs for even really minor characters. Whereas in Full Throttle, the reporter chick is just forgotten about and doesn't show up/do anything near the end, which a much better written game would have done, but the game feels hamstrung by Lucasarts giving it a low budget. Despite the really quality 2D animations in the cutscenes, there aren't a lot of characters in the game in general, and I love colorful characters in games that fill out game worlds.
Also fuck Tim Schafer, this game CLEARLY takes place in a post apocalyptic America.

the vga remakes of the first 3 king's quest games are a mixed bag, on the one hand they have surprisingly competent productivon values, they don't quite have the flair of the best looking vga games but otherwise they're a spitting image, smaller thing but the narrator is excellent, easily better spoken than who they had in 5 and 6.
on the other hand some obligatory cringy 00s era fanfic rears it's head, almost feels like it could be a parody in a few instances.

>>715458507in 2 the realm you travel to was formerly ruled by a progressive romantic king that wanted to advance the knowledge of the peasants. the local religious order is a cult serving an evil secret society that is the overarching villain of the remakes. the church opposed the progressive king and plotted to murder him, at some point the king became a vampire and the church used that as their excuse to remove him.
later in the story you realize that an old grandma with a little red riding hood stand in grand daughter was actually the progressive king's wife, and as a vampire he silently watches over them.
before the grandma can die the vampire decides to pass the curse on to her so she can live with him forever as a member of the undead, what's fucked up is that he also turns the grand daughter into a vampire. later in the story, you find out the backstory of the king's son and the parents of the grand daughter. they tragically died and orphaned the little red riding hood character. they now haunt the grounds of the vampire king's mansion. they remain as ghosts because they're waiting for the spirit of their daughter to join them for the trip to after life. to solve the quest involving them you show them proof that their daughter is a vampire and can never pass on with them to the other side.
so to recap this guy the game portrays as a tragic romantic hero cucked his son and basically killed his granddaughter's soul.

>>715460980Because she is. She is bonkers without being a cringey lol so randum girl.
>>715423863adventure games are the only reasonable way to execute most thriller premises in a videogame, anything with scenarios that aren't just straight over the top action or specifically secret agent stealth. if you wanted to do anything like breaking bad for instance, characters coming up with ingenious last second solutions to escape sure death, you don't do that with gta gameplay, it needs to be an interactive puzzle game.
>>715423579For me it's the Blackwell Saga.

>>7154405893 had a lot of cool levels, but IMO having one "human" goblin and one mute helper with no inventory was a big step back from Goblins 2, which had a comedy duo of two equally capable characters who played off each other and had different ways of doing things.
>>715440781Huh, I gotta check that out. Goblins 4 was pure unfiltered vomit, so I gave up on them, but it seems like they learned their lesson and went back to 2D graphics.
>The game consists of 4 parts. Once the Kingโs Chamber is finished, you must exit the game, and restart it IN STEAM (not by the Windows shortcut). There you can run one of the 4 executablesWhat in the holy debugging Jesus is this?

>>715456336>>715456619Fuck, I still have a CD of that somewhere.
I don't think I've ever finished it, it looked pretty cool but the story just didn't grip me. Same for Flight of the Amazon Queen.
I remember playing the Putt-Putt time traveling game

>>715455779Primordia might be my favorite adventure game. The puzzles hit just right for me, loved the setting and the look of it, loved the story, loved how there were multiple solutions to some puzzles. It was perfect in every way. Strangeland was good but just not as kino

>>715462835Blackwell is good, but I wouldn't call it a must-play like classic LucasArts or Primordia.
>>715469213>So, yes, I did technically get to meet Steven Spielberg face-to-face once while we were working on The Dig. I actually talked to him later on, when he called to get hints on one of our other games (I think it was Day of the Tentacle), which he was playing with his son. (One of the lesser-known perks of being a famous filmmaker is that you can talk directly to the game designers for hints instead of calling the hint line.) Nice guy.Cute

how do you feel about Gabriel Knight?
>>715425260Is that an imp girl in the middle?

>>715476560Original is good. Nice story, great visuals and atmosphere and Tim Curry. Remake feels off. Visuals are weirdly generic, like something from an early 10's adventure game generator, and the new voice actor doesn't fit Gabriel at all.I'm currently trying to get through GK2, but I've been stuck for a while and I refuse to use a guide. How do YOU feel about it anon?

For me, it was Simon
Only played one and two and I still no clue how there were like 3 more games after the third one, which was probably the worst looking game I've ever played, even for early 3D graphics.
