I am still livid that what was going to be their best looking game so far was cancelled in favor of gollum.
https://adventuregamers.com/games/the-devils-men
I know the director sold the studio for a big price, gave horrible advice to new owners with gollum, and then bought it back for pennies, all to avoid bankruptcy, big brain move but still stings that the devil's men was cancelled. hey at least most of the devs that left are making those wet dreams leisure suit larry games.

I had a friend growing up hyper into these games from this era. I would go to his house and he would replay and rebeat them with me. They were neat, but I never had the attention span to finish one myself. Well I guess two, Curse of Monkey Island and then many years later the sci-fi horror point and click Stasis. But that was it.

play neverhood.
easy to setup, and if you're too lazy you can play it on playstation emulator.
its a short game with lots of jokes and some easy and hard puzzles to keep you engaged.
its also dreamworks only inhouse game, so expensive that they shut it down and outsourced after that.
whole thing is made in claymation. smooth 60fps handmade claymation.
there's also a 10000 word bible level backstory etched into one of the rooms that you can read if you feel like it, only thing missing from playstaiton release.

I've always been surprised that people aren't even making simple ones with Game Maker and stuff because it already suits people who want less action and more storytelling in games. Like people love Undertale because the "proper" way of playing is to not fight any enemies, well here's a genre that doesn't have to have any fighting at all in it and you just walk around collecting items, doing puzzles, and talking to people. Really bizarre how it dominated PC gaming in the 90s and is so niche now.

funny thing is that deponia was made in the point and click genre's equivalent of unity.
nearly every dev team can use the same engine that handles all the tech work.
just make nice art and characters and puzzles and jokes. the story doesnt even need to make sense. it not making sense adds to the charm even. no need to touch the gameplay either, just spice up the puzzles.

It's true to the show and has really great voice acting.

There's maybe two really hard puzzles, but one of them made me question how I interact with adventure games because growing up, I thought they were static animations with reactions based on the right interaction. So I try to keep that puzzle in mind when I play others.

chinese do these for their fmv dating sims.
sadly they got usability issues.
imagine a timeline of A->B->C->D
now you play from A to D with certain choices.
you go back to A, and play with different choices up to B.
it lets you jump to C and D without finishing B, and go back to B again. and will not tell you what choices are kept.
you can finish B two times with different choices and start C, then jump to start of C using the journal, and you wouldnt know what choices are kept.
every fmv dating sim made by china and korea uses the same engine with this exact issue present in all of them. makes me pull my hair out.
just made me stop using the damn ui choice journal and go back to using mindmaps on paper like its a pc98 game again.

I do like Jason as Duckman but as a kid, I only questioned if it was him but still thought it was him, but now I just think the game VA is just a really good alternative even if I'd like to hear Jason's take on the material. Way better than Dan Castellaneta as the Genie

because point and click games are watered down adventure games. you dont have to input keywords and guess what to type. you dont even have to touch the keyboard at all. it was an attempt by publishers to get the normie audience. but it failed and they had to go make rts games to please the nerd crowd. sadly fps games succeeded in reeling in the normies and alas it was all over.

the meat of those games was playing around with an interactive cartoon world. every once in awhile you'd have the eureka moment and actually accomplish something but for the most part you were just fucking around to see what would be acknowledged by the game. this is why all the streamlined later games that reduced interaction to a single click sucked, there was nothing to do if you weren't getting the solution.

it's frustrating that so many licensed properties go the route of some illfitting sidescroller or action adventure. any comedy or even a thriller like breaking bad would be better served by being an interactive puzzle game.

I always wondered how much of that very german humor translated to other languages in the first one. The series is also a very interesting case showing the differences between the old crusty lucasarts age and the reborn era. Because the first one uses the old verb system, and they made proper use of that by putting tons of optional lines and jokes into wrong combinations, while the 2nd one uses the modern approach of making the game playing and just having 2 mouse buttons be reactionary to context of what you hover over. Which plays way nicer and smoother but also limits potential for optional lines.

So do I. I remember, I think it was the third Deponia game, having a line of dialogue about how one of the jokes was funnier in German. I've been thinking about playing the first E&H game in German, but my knowledge of the language is so basic that I doubt I would be able to get far without resorting to translations, and if I did I still wouldn't be able to understand much of the humor.

For me, the game wasn't talky enough, as I love talky adventure games, but I could also see if somebody hates characters talking too much, that they'd prefer Full Throttle to other games.

For me, the game is just an interesting piece of history as it's the stepping stone to Grim Fandango, which I consider to be Tim Schafer's masterpiece. If you were there for it's original release, maybe it IS the best adventure game at the time. Hearing the earlier stuff by Peter Mcconnell and being able to pick up on a few cues he'd reuse for Grim Fandango was super cool, and Tim Schafer's writing/comedy chops which he'd refine for GF. For example, Grim Fandango is pretty great at closing character loops/arcs for even really minor characters. Whereas in Full Throttle, the reporter chick is just forgotten about and doesn't show up/do anything near the end, which a much better written game would have done, but the game feels hamstrung by Lucasarts giving it a low budget. Despite the really quality 2D animations in the cutscenes, there aren't a lot of characters in the game in general, and I love colorful characters in games that fill out game worlds.

Also fuck Tim Schafer, this game CLEARLY takes place in a post apocalyptic America.

I beat it without a guide which surprised me, because there's at least ONE puzzle in these fucking games that gets me, but like a lot of adventure games, there was always fucky little interactions, and when you play enough adventure games, you start seeing how inconsistently devs handle them. Like I hate when an object has a smaller object on it that you never thought to hover over.

Woodruff fucking sucks. It runs on illogical puzzles like Gobli/ii/iiins, but you can't just try everything since there are too many locations and doing wrong things rarely produces funny results like it did in Goblins, so you get stuck all the time. And even if you do know what to do, there are tons and tons of tedious walking around until you get the Transportozon later in the game.

Gobliins 2 was the peak of the series and you can't convince me otherwise

You know what I meant. When people talk about modern point and clicks and where have they all gone they usually think about the sierra/lucas arts style ones. Like if we never had the original myst or riven and just got the modern remakes people wouldn't really think of them as point and clicks since they control like any other modern first person game. Basically, "adventure game" might be a more useful label.

Adventure games have some of the MMORPG problem where everyone imagined them as much better than they would actually be in reality, so the genre had an overall collapse

Aventure game people wanted to play stuff with as much depth and variety as books, MMORPG peopel literally wanted to disappear into a fantasy world like Narnia. Then IRL neither genre had anything to do with that.

the vga remakes of the first 3 king's quest games are a mixed bag, on the one hand they have surprisingly competent productivon values, they don't quite have the flair of the best looking vga games but otherwise they're a spitting image, smaller thing but the narrator is excellent, easily better spoken than who they had in 5 and 6.
on the other hand some obligatory cringy 00s era fanfic rears it's head, almost feels like it could be a parody in a few instances.
tldr they're worth giving a shot if for nothing else the authentic vga era visuals and a laugh, 3 is actually a decent update though, nice heightening of the Mannanan storyline.

gabriel knight is an ultra vanilla suggestion but imo it's one of the very few adventure games of that that manages to pull of a good balance of dark subject matter while still being a full on fun puzzle game. most of the other darker mature stuff of that time is either pretty jank or uninteractive.

in 2 the realm you travel to was formerly ruled by a progressive romantic king that wanted to advance the knowledge of the peasants. the local religious order is a cult serving an evil secret society that is the overarching villain of the remakes. the church opposed the progressive king and plotted to murder him, at some point the king became a vampire and the church used that as their excuse to remove him.
later in the story you realize that an old grandma with a little red riding hood stand in grand daughter was actually the progressive king's wife, and as a vampire he silently watches over them.
before the grandma can die the vampire decides to pass the curse on to her so she can live with him forever as a member of the undead, what's fucked up is that he also turns the grand daughter into a vampire. later in the story, you find out the backstory of the king's son and the parents of the grand daughter. they tragically died and orphaned the little red riding hood character. they now haunt the grounds of the vampire king's mansion. they remain as ghosts because they're waiting for the spirit of their daughter to join them for the trip to after life. to solve the quest involving them you show them proof that their daughter is a vampire and can never pass on with them to the other side.
so to recap this guy the game portrays as a tragic romantic hero cucked his son and basically killed his granddaughter's soul.

adventure games are the only reasonable way to execute most thriller premises in a videogame, anything with scenarios that aren't just straight over the top action or specifically secret agent stealth. if you wanted to do anything like breaking bad for instance, characters coming up with ingenious last second solutions to escape sure death, you don't do that with gta gameplay, it needs to be an interactive puzzle game.

3 had a lot of cool levels, but IMO having one "human" goblin and one mute helper with no inventory was a big step back from Goblins 2, which had a comedy duo of two equally capable characters who played off each other and had different ways of doing things.

>>715440781
Huh, I gotta check that out. Goblins 4 was pure unfiltered vomit, so I gave up on them, but it seems like they learned their lesson and went back to 2D graphics.

Original is good. Nice story, great visuals and atmosphere and Tim Curry. Remake feels off. Visuals are weirdly generic, like something from an early 10's adventure game generator, and the new voice actor doesn't fit Gabriel at all.I'm currently trying to get through GK2, but I've been stuck for a while and I refuse to use a guide.
