I never had any issues performing the crouch-jump in Black Mesa. The crouch Jump was a play mechanic in the original Half-Life 1, but it was rarely ever used in the main campaign. In Black Mesa, the devs decided to make every 4th jump a crouch jump.

The Black Mesa training course teaches you how to do it in the original game. I think it was only ever used a few times in the original Valve Half-Life in game. I think Blast Pit might have had a crouch jump and on a rail... maybe Zen? Crouch Jump was a mechanic that was abandoned for HL2 and its episodes. The Black Mesa devs deiced to go overboard with crouch jumping.
