Wayne represented the retarded man of valor who went and killed the Nazis in world war 2, the whole time proud of how cool and tough he was. He would come home and downplay his involvement but love every minute of how he was the brave hero.
Eastwood represents the man who went to be a hero and came home realizing he killed a bunch of young men before they ever got to live their lives, and almost all of their films reflect this kind of character.
Wayne will stand around and go kill the banditos and get the girl because that's what big strong heroes do. Eastwood will have lost everything in the first 5-10 minutes of the film and if he's lucky maybe find a modicum of peace, or at least live on to pursue said peace
