fantasy, furry and russian language servers are the most populated, while servers actually hosting something resembling ss13 have at most 20 people on them which is borderline unplayable.

Basically this. SS14, Goobstation in particular, is advancing at a fast enough rate that it'll reach feature parity with SS13 in a decent amount of time.

one thing about ss14 I don't understand. Some roles seem decently complex, but rounds seem to last about an hour. How the hell do people accomplish their tasks in such a short time?

Depends on the server. Avoid the upstream servers (Wizard's Den) and go for Goob or Delta V or whatever instead. Downstreams have surgery and a ton more antagonists.

Same kind of thing happened to me on my first round of ss13 ever, was fucking around in the bar figuring out my controls when I figured out I could throw cards. I decide to a throw a card at what I assumed was an afk player and the card gets embedded into his skull. The dude ended up bleeding out and dying and I got a fat boink because of it

Some end after an hour or two, others can go up to 8 hours. And some servers are full of pussies who'll cry for evac the moment a single slime shows up.

I actually have been a bit addicted to 14 lately. It's good fun but the communities are so soft. The server I play on is regularly raided by basedteens and its always fun to watch them lose their shit.
There are a lot of really cool and enjoyable people who play too though, it's a real mixed bag which I assume was always the case. People will remember you or just generally have a good nature or have a good character they really stick to.
Then there are players who live on the game, it's like vr chat with more mechanics. There are some people I see on that server no matter the day or night, it's kinda scary ngl.
The worst is meta grudging power tripping jannies who will break every rule they have when they have the opportunity and never face any of the reprecautions they serve up regularly to random just having a good time.
It's honestly an anathema, this is a game of near limitless interaction and people try so goddamn hard to ruin the main selling point of the game.
I blew up a tranny larping as mermaid in the public fountain with potassium, caught a week long ban for that. Other times I will rig disposals to fire 30 spears down a hallway and never seen any time with it because "it's funny." You really got to choose your audience in this game.
I managed to end up being a semi recognizable clown and I think that's where the best of the game lies.
Shits fun but it gets pretty samey if there is not an update on a while. I need a station where I can say nigger though
