Will there ever be another MMO that captures the imagination of a generation like WoW did?

No, not in any way. The newer generations of developers don't want to learn to create beautiful hand crafted worlds and the people paying them only care about efficiency and ROI. Even indie fags resort to asset store/AI crap as soon as they see something being popular on twitch for a week in order to clone it

No, games are evolving backwards. Companies pumping out MMOs need to understand if it's not as good/better than WoW when it came out then it's fucking useless to make the game in the first place.

nope, datatards will datamine any new mmo (probably before it even comes out) and ruin any sense of discovery.

No, because mmorpgs developers have completely forgotten the root of the genre ( D&D, MUDs) and now they are all skinner box diablo loot treadmills with dress up dolls attached. Including WoW. WoW wasn't even special, that's just blizzdrones and normalfags who confuse production value with fun.
Just like how D3 and D4 were shit but still sold record breaking amounts of copies just because they are blizzard products; WoW is the same type of product.

No. The reason for that is that every single new game released has a fully detailed guide with all available information and handholding features within the first couple of hours.
There is no mistery. There is no wonder. It's all solved/cracked on release.

It’s not just MMOs.

Games just can’t really do this anymore with internet ubiquity because there’ll be a wiki/optimization guide out within 48 hours for every square inch of the game.

Also there’s a point to be made that this has nothing to do with games and more with being a child.

A lot of people in my friend group didn't know about thotbot until years later. Now you have hundreds of sites dedicated to datamining all the information and spoon feeding you. It's almost impossible to avoid even if you're not actively looking for it.

Good point but it’s still more about the volume there is today. Thottbot was all you had when today you have multiple wikis, hours of video/streams, social media, and discord channels with the most autistic resources for min/maxing imaginable.

In 2004 I’d be happy to watch a 5min 240p clip without the landline phone interrupting.

Not with social media around. Discord has completely ruined any chances of there ever being a good mmo again. There will be no ingame communication and everything can be found on wikis and youtube videos. There is no exploration and no player interaction to speak of. The age of mmos is over.

the success and failure of a MMO has never been reliant on in-game communication. This is a myth and a total meme perpetrated by literal shitters who prob got spawn camped in Hilsbrad and uinstalled. Guilds were using TS/Vent/etc. well before even vanilla.

Its more that if you are actually having fun, you don't need to poke that datamined optimal levelling build inside a skinner box.
D1 to D2, and D2 to the patch where mob potion and minion EXP was altered, to modern LOD, to something like POE is massive changes towards making it less and less enjoyable as a game earlygame.

This.
I genuinely helps to inflate the chat, without it being a cancer global chat with 20.000 participants.

Basically this. You can't make another WoW if you're selling cosmetics or shortcuts out the gate. It simply dilute the experience when there's no reason to aspire to become more powerful and get cooler gear through hard work or skill, since you can get there by simply swiping your credit card. Also, early WoW worked because it was basically a singleplayer RPG with a multiplayer aspect to it, rather than a live-service game that had RPG mechanics. Most player never made it to 40-man raids, after all. They were happy to just level and do 5-man dungeons, and treat the game as a more casual experience. The rat race of always grinding for the best gear doesn't appeal to them, but is the model everyone's forced into because that's what keeps live-service engagement high. No-one would fund an MMO today that was designed for casuals to have fun with

Not unless the sci-fi full on brain interface VR MMO happens. what made it full of wonder was being so new in an era where people had never seen anything like it with a huge world people wanted to explore, and that is not happening without some kind of leap like that

I think mmos will have another renaissance. The trouble rn is the collapse of AAA. It's a bloated mess and they are doing everything they can to fuck their customers over. We need to get back to smaller more versatile teams that just want to make games that they would like to play and get the marketing sluts and corporate suits out and let devs cook.

It's literally impossible to go back to this unless some sort of apocalyptic catastrophe occurs and we need to rebuild our infrastructure all over again. The entire reason why it was such a big deal was because the internet was new and the concept of open world games weren't fully explored yet.

I am getting burnt out at level 55, this game really feels like a seasonal tarkov wipe. Hate to say it but OSRS enjoyers really did get more of an MMO where everything matters and doesn't get wiped after a new patch comes out. Maybe I should play that when I hit 60 since my sub is about to run out

WoW came from a PC dev who had already captured the imagination of a generation even before they made WoW, at a time MMOs and online interaction with strangers was a novelty to the average normie. Its hard to imagine another MMO being made that starts out running the moment its feet hits the ground like WoW did.

WoW had better controls, better combat, and better looking graphics on weak pc, than any other mmo at the time. Its biggest downside was that it was a time sink theme park MMO instead of a player driven MMO.
