It wouldn't matter either way because it's specifically what characters are being picked not what costume they're using.

I fail to see how that would be relevant since people who play Mario Kart nearly without exception pick a specific character rather than picking at random, hence why Cow and Shy Guy managed top 10 but not Wario or Bowser who have more costumes.

This isn't too different from Mario Wonder where Nintendo's official stats were Mario was the most picked character followed by Luigi and Yoshi. People really love the leading man and his loyal mount, I guess.
