How would you have fixed it while keeping the same basic plot beats/story structure ie Abby still kills Joel?

Killing Joel was a mistake, but the REAL problem was forcing Abby. Abby really is a dislikable character, they didnt even try. The fact that Ellie spares her is a meme, there isnt even a buildup to it.

Switch back and forth between Abby and Ellie more often not just once in the middle and have you deal with all Abbys shit after a mid game cliff hanger.

Even just that would have made the pacing better. Like get to know a character from abbies side then the next segment be Ellie murdering said character, rise and repeat the entire time and the revenge aspect would have felt 10x harder

There is no proper way to go about it if Joel dies at all. Joel was Playstations new superhero and he did the right thing. Joel was the draw to the franchise, not a buff retarded looking lesbian troon.

You play as her for a portion of the game, she doesn't "replace" joel
You play as Ellie quite a bit too but maybe you didn't know that

-Don't advertise that you play as Ellie or Joel whatsoever in the game
-The first third of the game (~6 hours) is about Abby and her dad leading up to her dad's death which would be a surprise (Salt Lake City)
-The second half third of the game would be playing as Joel up until his death by Abby (Jackson)
-The last third of the game would be playing as Ellie trying to take revenge on Abby (Seattle)

Cut all the superfluous shit with the WLF, Lev, etc.
Focus the story on what Joel did to Abby and what Abby does to Joel/Ellie.
Don't make Abby into a hulking gorilla lol

>Both games...
The first game was not good because of Neil druckmann because if you notice, Bruce Straley worked on pretty much all of naughtys best games. When he left, thats when TLOU2 the big stinker came out.
>How is it stupid
Its fucking stupid enough that they changed how his name was revealed in the show. Nobody would believe it otherwise.
>You play as...
Abby replaces Joel thats why they made her buff to mimic the feel of a strong male. She even has a mimicking character arc of saving someone.

i think neil just ended up liking Abby's character too much, which is wild. as someone who loves the game and still doesn't like abby as a character, but still can see why she did what she did, i think that showing that Ellie is still hurt, broken, and traumatized after killing her, maybe even more so, would have made the game feel so complete.

>Lev wakes up and see's her doing it
>Starts begging her to not do it
>Ellie suddenly realises what she's doing, Lev is saying the same things she said to Abby before she killed Joel and started the whole cycle of revenge
>She lets Abby go but at least this time has some semblance of a reason for stopping her drowning of Abby
It wouldn't be prefect but it would make more sense than the ending we got without having to resort to "Ellie kills Abby lol"

It's ruined the second the premise is that Joel gets killed by a "strong woman".
Had it been a strong fearsome hunk of a man, who bested Joel, I'd be really pissed, but then excited to play as an even cooler male protagonist, in a really macho way.

But the fact that the game wants to promote a woman built like a man with a stupid looking angry duck face and Greta Thunberg braid, is what gives the rest of the game a toxic energy, like it expected me to get angry, and it's now feeling validated at me staying mad at it.

But at the end of the day, aren't you supposed to basically enjoy a game? Even if it's trying to be challenging material? 28 Days Later had multiple endings considered, once very bleak where the male protagonist dies and it ends with the woman and little girl having to wander off into the darkness and stay independent. That was swapped for a cut where they all survive and get spotted by a plane, showing there's still hope, and it makes the whole movie feel more rewarding to rewatch.

Druckmann and Gross thinking they've got you by the balls unless you're a femoid who can figuratively spit on you as a male gamer, doesn't make TLOU2 a good experience just because it's testing my reactions.

It makes it an obvious and tiresome experience, that went where I figured it would and made me wonder if I'll ever like a Naughty Dog game ever again.

It's close to perfect and pretty much all suggestions are just worse than Druckmann's game script. That said:
I think the side characters on both Ellie and Abby's side could be stronger.
The surgery room and Abby's father should still look like dirty NPCs from the first game but that's nitpicking I guess.
The Rattlers are a little too extreme and pure evil so they could be toned down somewhat.

You can't tone down the rattlers because they're introduced in the last 2 hours of the game and have 0 time to be developed as a faction. The player needs to know they're instantly evil.
Which is kind of funny considering how much time Neil spent making the WLF/Scars sympathetic.
