Hot take but rolls should never exist in a cRPG. The reason rolls exist in pen'n'paper in the first place is to simulate skills you obviously do not have. It's the easiest way to simulate throwing a fireball and checking it's damage, checking if something hit, checking if you have enough charisma etc.

Video game worlds allow for actual, accurate, perfect simulation so there's literally no fucking point in rolling when you can just MAKE IT HAPPEN in the game engine. With dialogue you can also just unlock certain dialogue options depending on your stats and skill (like how Fallout does it).

Rolling in games is turbo retarded exactly for the reasons they are retarded in BG3 - they allow for savescumming and feel unfair instead of the result being the effect of your build + skill as a player.

There are different results than just having to fight. There are even some cases where succeeding a check will lead to less than desirable results.

Or don't be a faggot and build your character for what you want to do and accept some failures. Imagine playing DnD at a table and one faggot screams and cries when he rolls below the check, so all the other players give each other sidelong glances and say "Okay Anon, roll again..."

Even more baffling to me is that the game allows you to reroll up to 4 times in case you want to try again, so the game is actually very fair with giving you a fair chance at succeeding something that you really want, if you fail all 4 and still reload you should go to the nearest train station and jump at the rails

most of the combats are kinda shitty, sometimes you have to spend an entire round running just to get into range

bg3 is d&d with a powergamer DM with an antagonistic attitude towards their own players
it does a good job of showing the weaknesses of the d20 system though

The problem is that player skill can completely eclipse stats in most cases. How are you supposed to roleplay a character with no lockpicking skill when your player skill can open any lock with 100% accuracy? And if one system is made superior by flawless execution, how do you balance others to naturally meet the same standards? It's not fair that a fighter can perfectly engage in combat while never getting hit while the mage is artificially restricted to a limited spell list and casting limitations.

What? no way the combat is actually amazing.
If your units are far and the opponent units are far, use the first turn to place your units in advantageous positioning with dash and crouch.

Sadly I can't think of any. I think it could work though, like if failing a speech check gets you thrown in prison which means you're now stuck having to escape and maybe you can get an exclusive party member or access to the police station or something.

Well for one example, there's a gang of ogre mercenaries you can meet in Act 1. On one hand you can pretend to be on their side and just move on. Or you can convince them to act as your own hired thugs, calling on them to fight for you later on. Or you can choose to simply antagonize and kill them, which gets you a unique magic item one of them happened to eat off an earlier victim. These all earn you the same xp in the end, but adds variations based on your choices.

>Disco Elysium
Yeah they may be funny but they don't actually give you exclusive content at all, in fact Disco Elysium has a lack of branching paths in its narrative, espeically when you realize its a 100% narrative driven game, like the devs don't need to think about anything else other than dialogue content and still it felt linear and restrictive on a 2nd playthrough because you always end up in the same places, and your alternative choice to other endings is to just fail (like Gale ending the game in act 2)
>>715479839
Witcher 2 had that, but it was a slog to replay and most people ended up picking a single choice.

It could work in a small RPG where budget is no big deal, but in AAA RPG like this, designing a game inside a game is basically dooming yourself with extremely long development cycle that is not sure to pay off its worth.

Baldur's Gate 3 philosophy towards choice and consequences differs a little bit from Bioware/CDPR style.

It gives you two identical paths but gives you multiple threads to travel between them, instead of the alternative which gives you multiple paths but with a single thread between them, resulting in the same 3 outcomes over and over, compared to the same result but with multiple different variations to achieve it.

Anyway Durge content is pretty solid, i wish they had some 1 or 2 exclusive dungeons, but i mean they probably didn't want to take so many risks, im sure the devs didn't even predict the game will be such massive success, they will probably do that in their next game given their status now.

new vegas solved this, you either succeed in the moment or dont and you accept this as part of the reality of the character you have created (or use a bunch of drugs and wear a retarded minmax of items to get enough to boost you over the line)
