Honestly, it didn't. They're doing two different things. Skate is more a "sim" (loosely using that term) while Tony Hawk's Pro Skater/Underground/etc. was "arcade."

I just like the comfortable middlezone it's wound up occupying. I like tony hawk but those games very quickly just feel like a million combos on a twelve kilometer railgrind while raping 16 clowns and collecting CUNT for maximum high scores.
And then on the other hand you have all these post-skate simulators where it takes an hour for you to figure out how to do a kickflip, and every trick is one single sort-of decent grind, and it's all early access so the skateboards don't have wheels yet (wheel update coming in 2027)
I liked the step towards realism, but stopping at a healthy point where its still arcadey and fun first.

Online map making that was actually good hall of meat played better into the jackass side of skating the controls are a good mix of accessible but challenging when learning high level tricks. Skate is also slower than Tony Hawk which gives you more time to just chill just slamming combos and chaining grinds or the more difficult controls of skaterxl and session. There was also a lot of customization in a good way I think American wasteland is the closest tony hawk to skate

As someone who who skated I like it because it did more realistic shit than tony hawk combo shit for high scores. In tony hawks pro skater, i'd try to do shit like nollie backheel a 10 stair but would fucking fly over the entire stair set by a mile.

Tony Hawk came out when I was like 6, I had no idea how the fuck ollies even worked after playing. I thought skating was just magic because it was so unrealistic. Like you just magically jump. I had absolutely no understanding of the actual physics of skating. If Skate had come out when I was a kid, I think I would have understood it better. Maybe.

Okay, I had to refund thps3+4 because it felt like shit to play. I'm playing thps1+2 and it feels way better. there's no way it's exactly the same. 3+4 felt like the moves had input delay and felt way more glitchy and fucked up. you cannot tell me it's exactly the same.

why is skate 3 so popular? because of the glitches and custom parks and being able to spawn stuff in making it way more fun and replayable. also I knew someone (kinda friends but not that close) who was pretty high on the skate 2 leaderboards on 360 but he fucking died. I had just started hanging out with him and some friends on weekends sometimes and one day he just ODed... I respect skate 2 though because he liked that one more. the 3rd one is kind of babyish in comparison. I only had 3 though so that's the one I played the most (casually). I tried 2 on an emulator but I just wanted to practice doing speed glitches and launches on 3 because I had just found out about them after not playing for years.

THPS is arguable less of a skateboarding game and more of a spastic mashing platformer while the skate series embodies everything about skating. It's the pure arcade vs attempting any sort of realism that makes skate all around more enjoyable. The new on looks like gaas trash though unfortunately

The trick animations do look terrible especially when grinding. It was forgiveable in 1+2 because it was compared to PS1 games but 3 and especially 4 have much smoother animations that actually blend with each other.
