Probably Guacamelee or Lost Ruins, hard mode in lost ruins is too hard though so it loses a point for that, especially since you can't change difficulty mid run

Yes it is.
It's a sidescrolling 2d platformer with a connected world where you can go back and explore old content again, with movement upgrades/exploration tools that facilitate doing exactly that.

Having a top down overworld is a refinement since it adds a dimension to how your levels can be connected which can be used to cut down on time spent backtracking.

These two and it's not even close. Hollow Knight comes right after.

What makes it a metroidvania? You don't acquire new traversal abilities to reach previously unreachable areas. Cave Story's progression is extremely flag-heavy.

Chasm is a nice budget title, very basic.
My favourite metroidvania would be salt and sanctuary. Near damn perfect indie title. Dev got greedy with salt and sacrifice and got his flop. Rightfully so.

Gucamelee. Just really good platforming in it for a Metriodvania. There also isn't a lot of back tracking in it as well due to how the layout loops around.
