Steam dropped support for Windows 8.1 a year or two back. I've still been able to play just fine all this time, only with Steam gobbling up more resources than it usually would. More recently in the past few months, some game demos and early accesses have stopped downloading midway, unable to connect to the servers.

However, today there was an update for Steamworks Common Redistributables that wont connect to the servers either. That means that most of the major games I play wont fucking launch because they need an "Update" that can't be downloaded.

Fellow Windows 7/8/8.1 bros; how you holding up?

Because I donโ€™t want my OS to look like a Fisher Price tablet and send telemetry straight to Microsoft every 5 seconds. Win8.1 might be the bastard child of 7 and Metro, but at least I can wrangle it into behaving like a real desktop OS. Not everyone's ready to bend over for DirectStorage and rounded corner UI bloat, anon.

You too, huh?
Use VxKex to spoof steam as running on win10 so it updates itself without complaint.
Then it will update games all you want.
Remember to back up your original folder since it won't revert unless you delete everything but your steamapps and paste the old steam files back in.

A better question would be this! Why the fuck would you RENT video games in the Steam anyway? You don't own anything in the Steam. The Steam actually admits that don't own anything in their website!

Then why'd you get Windows 8? Win10 was great and Win11 is pretty much the same thing with more obnoxious default settings.

Windows 8.1 looks 10x better than Windows 10.

Also 8 is better than 10 and 11 on a top 20 countdown.

I'm not him, but probably because it worked until now. Windows upgrades are always highly questionable at best, so "don't fix what isn't broken" applies.

OP here.
I fixed it.
If you're experiencing this problem, do the following,
>Click Steam in the top left
>Click Go offline...
>Click on Update for the Steamworks games that wont launch
>Should replace Update with Play
>Play one or two of them
>Exit
>Switch back to Online mode
>Steamworks updates without issue
I am afforded more time before switching to Linux.

Maybe a month ago. Sounds like the same issue you have. The issue only became clear when I ran Barotrauma and the console said steamworks multiplayer was rejected due to the api being too out of date.

Haven't tested yet but why do you need to revert the client if in theory vxkex allows you to bypass the OS incompatibility and update the games?

windows 7 chad here, i also got cock blocked by some recent change that prevents me downloading crap. So I download it to my steam deck and transfer it over via winpinator. Then you can run the exe manually and it should validate latest version (after restarting steam)

There isn't any particular need. But you'll never be able to download another version of steam that works natively on 7 again.

Because at the time, I was renting games from Blockbuster for $12 for one week, when Steam had its first sale and games were literally half that, it was simply a better deal. I had always assumed any of these services would just unceremoniously close one day and I'd lose access, but so long as I had whatever I got on it for about the same time as a rental store, I'd be just as happy.

I'm still surprised to this day that Steam has never actually turned to shit, sold out, or just closed down. I still have a lot of games on physical medium but after the Xbox1/PS4 era they don't even sell physical games anymore. Ironically, this is less of a problem for me now because I just haven't bought anything new in the last 5 or so years.

Are you people aware that running an OS that is like half a decade or more out of date is a recipe for disaster? There are thousands CVEs (vulnerabilities) in windows 7/8 that will never be fixed.

I don't think it really matters if the PC in question doesn't have anything on it. If someone were to take control of my Win7 system, it wouldn't even have access to the rest of my home network based on how things are configured for it. And I don't care about having to wipe my video game PC and start over.

Ain't no one scouring for those vulnerabilities because it's not cost effective.
You're running bots to look for 8GB RAM machines to run a botnet?
These things can't even mine crypto.
And that's if there are even that many machines in the first place. You'd probably end up with a small pool of useless garbage.
It's the equivalent of raiding a tollbooth for money, you'll end up with spare change for the effort.
