>>715520697I finished P5Royal a couple weeks ago and was a certified P5 hater after playing the original on release. It was my first one and the game did not live up to the hype at all. So many hours into the game and still getting tutorials? No thanks. The first palace was also riddled with talking (about the obvious).
After finally biting the bullet and playing P5R, I still think the games combat is meh. It only really shines on the burger bloke but even then they do it in the most PUNISHING way possible to the point where its frustrating. A few tweaks and it wouldve been alright.
The interweaving of foreshadowed moments were pretty nice, especially with Akechi, Kasumi and Maruki. The only one I flat-out caught was Maruki's ex-GF getting mentioned, but I didn't think it was because he'd be the antag of Semester 3.
The flaws I mentioned (with the handholdy palaces and such) are still present and annoying, but i just accepted them. The worst piece of dialogue is the exposition between Shido and Akechi, just fully explaining their plan to the audience over 5 minutes. So lazy.
I enjoyed the Akechi twist, and I enjoyed all of Semester 3. The questions it brought up I could tell were what probably inspired Clair Obscur 33, as the whole story is based around it. After checking some interviews i believe that was certainly the case.
That being said, the bosses of each palace are kinda shit. There's not really any strategy (bar the burger one) as most of them have some arbitrary damage you have to reach before you can "actually" fight them. And even then, they have no weaknesses -- making a lot of the combat systems even MORE simple.
But yeah, despite being a hater to begin and all of its flaws, I'd still give it a 9/10. Even though the day to day stuff and combat was getting a bit tiresome towards the end, I was sad it was over.
Also, Makoto.
