I'll always remember when I first decided to get this game after dipping my toes in some weebery with Fire Emblem Awakening and got it along with some other games like Tales of the Abyss and Lord of Magna. I was charmed and the deal was sealed. I immediately sought out the Luminous Arc games and to this day I adore otaku games with similar aesthetics even as they're becoming rarer and rarer. Rest in peace Imageepoch, you made me a JRPGfag for life. I wonder if I should have got a Vita instead. Whatever, it doesn't matter now.

For me, it comes down to the aesthetics a lot of the time. In other words, I'll put up with quite a bit of jank for cute anime girls. I became a Compile Heart fag after all. But yes, Stella Glow's gameplay is pretty good for what it is. Especially if you try to do the bonus challenges like I did, it's a lot more engaging than Fire Emblem Awakening.

Stella Glow is a grindfest if you want to do later tuning levels, you have to go around and specifically level up in order to get the stats you need to handle some of that shit that's just set up to prank you and make you redo it

There are ways to trivialize most of the main fights but I spent legitimately 5-10% of my playtime grinding levels, and it should have been none

That's weird, I don't think I ever needed to level grind in this game.
Granted, I abused Nonoka heavily and she's one of the most busted characters I've seen in a tactical RPG. Status effects are disgusting in Stella Glow and Nonoka is the queen of them. Hell, even in the late game when status starts to fall off she can just pivot to debuff stacking and she'll still be a top 3 unit thanks to her general utility (high speed plus good mobility is just really good in this game).

It's fun. Just enough depth to the units that it's satisfying to figure out the best ways to abuse them, and the presentation is great. I have a few issues with the game (story relies a bit too heavily on contrivances and characters being unreasonable, there really needed to be a way to skip enemy turns because late game that shit gets unbearable, new game+ is the only way to see all the worthwhile content in one run but it also makes the game too easy thanks to the xp buff), but overall it's fun.

It wasnt a "budget FFT clone", it was a Luminous Arc spiritual successor. They never intended to be a clone to FFT, and it has many mechanics and characters similar to the Luminous Arc trilogy for the DS, which are all great games

Only played Stella Glow but I assume they're all fast units with good mobility? That's pretty much why Popo is one of the best witches despite being pretty average outside of being fast (and on the other end of the spectrum why Mordimort is one of the worst units in the game).

I personally liked the dub, but all the Witches' songs are sung by their Japanese seiyuus, which creates a bit of a disconnect with the dub, so you should probably do the undub if you can.

Good grief all these images of Sadie are shit resolution.
Anyway, yes they're all fast and also all have flight and can thus ignore terrain. I forget if Sadie and Popo can, but Vivi is allowed to sit on normally impassable terrain like lava because she's flying. Vivi has a good magic stat which is good because magic gets extremely overpowered when you get the giant AOEs. For me when I recruited Sadie she was massively above everyone else in level on my team, and also seemed to have a fat magic attack stat. I regularly ended up with most of my units dead and then Sadie just kited them with her flight, magic range and far faster turn orde.r

All of the playable characters (and important NPCs) had good performances.
Weakest link is probably Hilda because it's Wendee Lee and she's not remotely trying to imitate Yukari Tamura, but more trying to sound like some weird in between with Yahiko and Faye Valentine.

Movement reduction is short for character select-forcing for those with high base mov, mobility, and range. You can brute force it if necessary, but the game's not that hard except that mission in THAT chapter that requires Alto to survive a fight against THAT character when the main goal is for everyone to escape.

Certain characters don't suffer movement penalties on sand terrain as well, most notably Sakuya (which the game tells you in the tutorial when you start Chapter 4). Rusty also gets an ability that lets him ignore movement penalties from terrain, but it might come a bit late for that chapter outside of NG+.

A friend of mine in college showed me this game because he knew exactly what I'd like. He was right, ended up being one of my favorite games on the 3DS to the point where I played through it to get every ending inspite of what a grindfest it could be. Love the music, love the characters, love the big ol silly twist with the evil angels, loved how this is like the only piece of fiction I can think of where the chancellor didn't end up being comically evil and was a loyal bro the whole time.

That friend is now terminally online, doesn't play vidya anymore and spends his time seething about trump on bluesky and defending troons from mean posts on social media

Him slapping the shit out of Archibald and rallying everyone was awesome. You knew he was a bro the moment he started reminiscing about carrying Ana around when she was a child and that the reason he was so uptight and stern was for her sake. The story would have been significantly worse had he ended up just being some kind of Mayor Bonanza.
