The discourse about this game was so retarded, but we'll have to wait another 20 years for people to call it an "unsung masterpiece" like with Sonic Adventure 2

Adventure 2 had a great critical reception when it first came out
Frontiers was rated a 7/10 game on launch
Not the same thing.

>best selling Sonic game of all time outside of the ones bundled with the Genesis
>coasted off success from the movies that got a lot of new kids into the franchise
This is going to be heavy nostalgia core 15-20 years from now if not sooner. Like the Heroesfags that grew up playing the first real multiplat Sonic game, but worse. Have to wonder what gen alpha video game essays are going to be like.

Frontiers is SOVL.
It's not the best Sonic game ever made. It's got both game-feel problems and level-design shortcomings that are beaten by Unleashed and the Adventure games, but even without making a comparison to Forces, I feel very enchanted by Frontiers when I play it. It may ape Breath of the Wild but they really "sonicified" it, and I actually ended up thinking that Open Zone design trumps Zelda as an Open World conversion. Sonic is meant to always be moving and be so fast you can run across impressive distances. It makes the whole idea of being on a massive land more appealing. And although the "level design" outdoors clash aesthetically, I think having a constant stream of grind rails and ramps and pieces of platforming is way more fun than Zelda being like 50% Morrowind all of a sudden and then 50% stuffing old-school Zelda design into mini-dungeons.

Cyberspace's "sameness" was also alleviated over "Shrines" by having completely unique OST across the entire game and having at least 3 different boilerplate aesthetics as opposed to literally just 1 aesthetic.

It's obviously not better than BotW, but just the fundamentals, to me clicked way more organically for me than Zelda did because I just found myself missing old Zelda whereas in Frontiers I thought running freely, talking to Amy/Knuckles/Tails and fighting as Super Sonic made for a super interesting format.

But like with Shrines in Zelda, i really want them to make Sonic Levels SEAMLESS next tiem. I really want them to have the constraints of Open World but make at least 7 super intricate pieces of "Sonic Level" as part of the open world space. Maybe it'd just have to be high up, or strictly on mountains, but it could be done in a way that doesn't clash with falling out of bounds.

I'm just excited for Frontiers 2. I would like if it wasn't "Digital World" themed though. That kinda lowers the stakes for me. I prefer when Sonic is more like a "superhero" plot.

It's boring open world slop and the few levels it does have are over in a minute. Bosses were okay.

The game looks like the hire this man Sonic in an unreal engine grassy field meme. It has ugly generic โ€œalienโ€ geometry that litters the sky constantly. A bunch of cyberspace themes are generations level themes again, and even reuse level design from them and previous games. Amyโ€™s arc is all about pleasing people who didnโ€™t like her personality in the first place, Tailsโ€™ is essentially โ€œIโ€™ll be better written in the next game, sorry you didnโ€™t like me in the 2010sโ€™. The entire game is trying to treat it so seriously it forgets they are supposed to be appealing cartoon characters with large personalities so they all have to pretend this is the worst thing that has ever happened and they need to act melodramatic about it. The game ends on Sonic doing a โ€œSo that just happenedโ€ style quip. Soul is not the word I would use to describe it.

It feels like a very rushed game, which is ironic considering the tortured development journey. You can feel the development crunching in real time as the later islands get filled with almost all 2D parts which were probably easier to put in. And how most of the minibosses on the last island are just reskins.
Then the last titan feels noticeably less grand than the others, and the final boss is so awful that the devs decided that it was a better idea to just replace it with nothing on the game modes journos were likely to play.
Most of the post-launch updates feel like they were just adding stuff they didn't have time to finish by launch day.

Sonic Frontiers is one of those cool techdemo games that are overpriced.

BotW and Pokemon Legends were like that for me. Yet the sequel to both of those games fix nothing (actually look somehow worse?) and I have no faith Sonic will do better.

They are fallible and they do not represent fan consensus. However, they're still a decent temperature check for broad impressions.
At the bare minimum, while it's futile to attempt to prove or disprove what impressions were collectively 20 years ago, it's still sufficient to point to review outlets (which were also less dishonest 20 years ago) as a rebuttal to anon's implication that it went "unsung."

Yesterday I saw a guy saying the stilted, wooden dialogue and awkward pauses in Kingdom Hearts are intentionally Lynchian, there's no limit to how stupid it can get

What was good about it? I mean its AITE I guess. At least it wasn't completely terrible like Sonic Unleashed, but I'm struggling to think how it can be on SA2's level? No memorable songs. No chao garden. None of the cast really mattered besides Sonic and that loli chick

I was actually alive when SA came out, and people fawned over it as Dreamcast's killer-app that rivalled Mario 64. SA2 also got a positive reception, but the announcement of Sega going 3rd party soured things a bit.

Both games are terrible BTW.

Well said. Unlike most open worlds your reward for exploring is actual levels, and said levels have multiple missions. Its not like mario where you'd get some one-off platforming challenge in the sky

Update 3's "new" ending really was just Sonic Team going
>oh woops we didn't have time to make an ending before so here it is now haha
At least it was free but jesus it's kinda grim to think about despite it not being a new thing at all for Sonic games to be blatantly unfinished.

>>715506267
Your reward for exploring is short linear stages that have a bunch of missions that can be cleared in 30 seconds on average and then a shit ton of items that become useless after you hit your level cap for abilities.
>Its not like mario where you'd get some one-off platforming challenge in the sky
You're not serious, are you? That's like 75% of the open world is just that.

Like Frontiers is "okay" and everything but it absolutely does not do anything new or interesting with the open world formula at all. It's just a mish mash of BoTW and Mario Odyssey and it's not even subtle about it.
