I usually play as a guy, because I can relate to more types of guys. I like variety though and I'm not a crippled autist so I'll play chicks sometimes.
In terms of something like Pokemon I just play whichever has the best visual design which is usually the guy in most series, but in pokemon is usually the girl.

It depends on whether or not the game is online where I can scam people out of free items because they think I'm a girl. If offline, and it's a custom character, I make a male that resembles me. If it's a character that I'm clearly playing as, then I just make what I think the character would look like, male or female.

For whatever reason, I am genuinely not good at or comfortable with pretending to be something I dont think I am. Even as a child when roleplaying during recess I could never pretend to be the bad guy because i was bad at it and felt wrong.
