Generally, how does this game hold up? Do you prefer Super Mario 64 to the other Nintendo 64 era platformer games? Also, why did Princess Peach have this very creepy-looking painting in her basement?

It doesnt hold up. Age has not been kind to it. Modern platformers. Even team b and 3d indie platformers are far more enjoyable to play. The only thing keeping it relevent is speedrunners, modding community and the name the games attached to. The core gameplay from a caual standpoint has aged worse than a dogturd.

Yes, and I believe it's still better than most of the slop released today. I like Banjo-Kazooie and Conker and other N64 platformers, but Mario manages to come out on top as its fluid movement system is enough to carry the entire game without a need for any special moves or gimmicks. Other than hats I guess, which I'm actually not a fan of.

Enjoy your double-jump-crutch level design. I'd rather actually get better at executing complex moves as I progress through the game.

>complex moves as you progress
The whole game can be 100% completed with just normal jumps and wallkicks
>inb4 autistic speed running

Sunshine is the only bad 3D mario game and even then you can fix it just by using an emulator and save states

I'll take that over arbitrary random special moves that take no skill but pretend to make the game deeper.

controls are still phenomenal 30 years later, but the camera is a pain sometimes (gets 20x worse in romhacks). Playing with the free cam mod makes a massive difference in enjoyement.
>Do you prefer Super Mario 64 to the other Nintendo 64 era platformer games
yeah its the most polished one and the easiest to replay.
>why did Princess Peach have this very creepy-looking painting in her basement
lots of weirdly creepy things in this game. Piano, twomp face, stairway, quicksand and so on.

Only the camera has aged poorly because we're used to full control and no collision
As far as gameplay goes I think it's the best aged 5th gen game. The weight of mario and the depth in his movement set and how everything interacts is still unmatched by modern games. Just moving mario around very basic geometry feels great when you have a dive, rollout, kicks, long jump, slide tackle. And once you get more intricate level design there's a lot of fun sequence breaking you can do with the right combination of jumps, kickks and wallkicks

Generally yes.

Best game ever made idgaf. As a kid I just loved running around and jumping so much I didn't even beat the game until like 5 years later. I played it all the time it's so fun

the core gameplay, having fun with mario's acrobatic moveset and momentum, is still excellent, up there with anything that has come since. the game built around it is more of a mixed bag, depending on who you ask could be drab and tedious or soulful.
the pc port solves any camera and control issues that might have existed in the original game.

pisses me off how many retarded faggots on here misuse hyperbole to the point of just being straight up wrong, speaking nonsense.

Dire dire docks is shit I agree. Rest of the game’s good. One star in rainbow ride or whatever was annoying but that level itself was still fun. One complaint is that sometimes the music gets repetitive. Good songs but adding an extra 2-3 would help. The bomb omb battlefield theme being in so many levels is something that bothered me on my last playthrough a few years ago

Goemon was really good. The “vibes” and rpg/dialogue aspects were awesome. Good feel to the movement but I wouldn’t consider it the same genre as mario, but yeah great game. Can’t believe there wasn’t another actual 3D goemon after this, just that 2.5D side scrolling one I think (?)

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is the best N64 game made IMO
Mario 64 is still fun, but it doesn't have giant robot battles and borderline incomprehensible humor

Didn't know anyone with an N64 growing up, so coming to /v/ to discover that everyone actually hates Tiny-Huge Island is really just disheartening.
