They are Formula 1-tier cars from the time, not shitbox dragsters doing rallying.
It is tonally appropriate, mafia has always had connections with racing- first horse racing, then car racing.
It is amazing to play if you know how to drive, and if you don't, you will learn by the time you complete it. This mission showcases Mafia's driving physics that are otherwise fairly obscured behind the mafia things.
The only sin it commits is that there isn't a set of side missions with more and different races.

Whether you think it's hard or not entirely depends on if braking before turning is an alien concept to you. Everyone who plays normal racing games thinks it's fine or easy, everyone who wants driving to feel like burnout 100% of the time has a spaz attack and rages at the game.

I've never seen a split this obvious because it's really rare for a mass market game to have niche interests. The Devs were eastern Europeans who liked realism, driving and had racing wheels on their desks. This is also why the driving in GTA will never be interesting because you can see how the mass market reacts when you implement real driving concepts.

The gameplay doesnt exist in the remake because the driving model is nearly entirely computer assisted, skippable and the action set pieces in the story you could play through have been replaced by unskippable cutscenes so you dont spend that much time actually playing the game, you just watch cutscenes of a super giga hd 4k grafix retelling of the story done by people who failed their shot at making it into Hollywood.

There was a shortcut in the original that allowed you to cut half the track every lap.
They took that away in the remake but also scripted half of the racers to crash during the race, you just have to remember where so you don't get wiped out alongside them.

the thing about Air Raid was the PS2 controller aiming sensitivity was too low to react to the incoming RC barons quick enough. some pop in behind you then vice versa and it takes too long to turn around.

supply lines also dicks you on the PS2 as you had less fuel. enough people complained about Zero's missions that the PC version gives you more fuel. it's still doable tho just open the map and pick the targets in the right order. you can land the plane on the ground and shoot them from the ground then take right back off.

GTAIV introduced the ability for cars to stall, and the more your car is fucked up from damage, the worse it performs. this isn't too dissimilar from GTAV's performance nerfs, but i recall cars stalling less and its driving is overall more "arcade-y" even if you've stuffed a compact car down enough it can fit into the zone of a clown car.

so in conclusion yes IV's driving is very much shit.
