I think there is narrative, although to your point it's easy to miss because a lot of surreal hullabaloo, but I suppose that can be chalked up as creative liberties regarding spirits and gods, in a relatively modern setting.
The narrative is a story of a self-centered girl learning compassion, and responsibility, and just in general growing the fuck up/ getting her shit together.

Chihiro started to movie (understandably) complaining about a major life change, but made a point to ham it up and take her friend's gestures of kindness for granted because there wasn't larger gestures. She starts working out of necessity, like we all do, and instead of whining about her situation, she approaches her challenges earnestly, and shows growth in caring for others, and not just herself.
Again, I agree that there's a lot to jumble that message up, and can be missed, but it the message is there.

Then I suppose we agree to disagree. At the end of the day, a story doesn't need to achieve some level of poignancy, although kudos if/ when they do, it ultimately just needs to be entertaining. I don't enjoy what I do for the sake of others and their opinions, I enjoy for my own sake. That's why it was such a relief to jump off the modern gaming bandwagon, it was exhausting trying to tolerate all these modern practices that get nothing but praise, that I simply don't find fun
