Did you know? In Mortal Kombat Deception, there is an optional side-mode called Konquest, which is a full-length open world RPG with a day and night cycle, a week/month/year cycle, a weather system, six huge separate worlds, and having your character age in real time with the world.
Though rough around the corners and often misunderstood by folk who just wanted to rip people's heads off in a fighting game, it is actually surprisingly quite complex in how much effort they put into it and, more importantly, extremely comfy with a very relaxing soundscape. You can just stand there in a dzen-like tranquility and watch as the world moves by you.
And all that is just a side-mode in a fighting game, like the 5th option in the main menu. This could have easily been sold as its own thing, yet they included it as a bonus in another game. Can you imagine something like that nowadays?

It does not have a weather system or real time aging. The aging only happens at set points in the story
Konquest should not be nearly as fun as it is. More than the sum of its parts

Fighting games during this era didn't have online ladders so they had to make compelling single player content to get people to play the games. This had the side effect of making them appealing to people other than the 15 dudes who play fighting games competitively.

Konquest was a good idea, but the execution was meh. But it's still the best PS2 Mortal Kombat.

Deceptions Konquest was kino. I remember losing my shit laughing when my cousin and I were playing the game and I was in the Netherrealm (fiery lava place?) and I needed onyx coins or some shit and out loud said "damn I need some coins" and on cue some random half naked NPC guy runs up to me and initiates a dialogue prompt and gives me the exact type and amount of coin I needed. Truly one of the gamer moments of all time.
