It's called Donkey Kong Bananza. The Mario Odyssey team and engine are making Bananza. That's what they're working on. The team that would make Mario Odyssey 2, from the end of Mario Odyssey's development, have been making Bananza.

Just so you don't get in your head that Mario Odyssey's "B Team" or something are the ones making Bananza. There might possibly be a Mario game in development but if there is it isn't by the Odyssey team or part of the Odyssey lineage.

I don't believe in "teams". At first I thought it was true that the "Odyssey Team" made it, but the more I've looked at footage the less Odyssey-like it seems. The UI is not done nearly the same way, and the Destruction Physics and "Open World" levels looks way more like it's made by a different kind of team setup. I believe the Odyssey Team largely transfered to the 3D World Team to make Bowser's Fury, to then switch over to the next Mario game.

This isn't Odyssey 2. It's kind of a small set of Odyssey extra devs and Monolith Soft making an "open world Donkey Kong 3D game". I believe Odyssey 2 is coming soon.

I think the next 3D Mario is still coming but they put a different team on it. I think it's going to be very different and maybe even a totally different kind of game. Wouldn't surprise me if it were seamless open world instead of individual stages. I think they wanted to give launch window promotion to DK because they already know Mario is a guaranteed hit anyway and they're trying to resurrect late 80s/90s DK cultural clout in time for his standalone movie.

We're not going to see another 3D Mario game from the Odyssey team for a while for obvious reasons.
Realistically if we do get one It'll likely be from another team, 3D World team at best, Good-Feel if Nintendo is feeling suicidal.

I think that it just doesn't look like Mario Odyssey in spirit. I'm sure Mario Odyssey 2 has been prepared as the "Big game" for Switch 2. It also took around a year for Mario Odyssey to come out for Switch 1, and IIRC the console came out sooner in 2017 than Switch 2 did this year, so there's probably a Nintendo Direct this July to announce it after DK Bananza is released.

It doesn't matter what you think. The director for Mario Odyssey has spent the last eight years directing Donkey Kong Bananza. He has worked with the same staff that he worked with on Mario Odyssey. What staff, what director do you think is secretly working on a sequel to a nearly ten year old game? ALL of the people who would have been working on Mario Odyssey 2 immediately started work on Donkey Kong Bananza after Mario Odyssey was completed. Mario Odyssey is a completed game, the brand is completed, they won't be doing a sequel. If it was planned these are the people who would be working on it. There may be a 3d Mario game in the world, but it isn't Odyssey related if it does exist, because the people who work with the Mario Odyssey engine are using it to make Donkey Kong Bananza.

I wouldn't say so. They're very different. Donkey Kong stages usually aren't there to be beaten or at least flowed through the first time through, especially later on. Mario games are about teaching a mechanics early on so you can hit flow in a new stage and usually clear it with gold reactive execution. DK stages are about learning and then optimizing.

Yeah, they only reason they even did Galaxy 2 in the first place was that they just wanted it to be an expansion to Galaxy 1, but they had so many ideas for it, they were like "Fuck it, make it a new game". But because it was a direct sequel to a 3D Mario game at all, I guess that's just broken people's minds even to this day

I hope not. I hated the cap mechanic and the random worlds so much. I wish we could get a game that is more ethereal like sm64

Not so, especially on SNES a lot of the traps don't allow you to Intuit them due to screen and sprite size. Things like Zingers starting off screen to specifically punish you if you're moving at top speed through a section are very common.
