You can't really build a killbox for quite awhile and you can't really take advantage of the better turrets since power is in short supply (unless you want to constantly build geothermal every time you pick up and move which wastes resources). Also, plasteel is a lot harder to come by since you don't really have much time to do any underground scanning due to the approaching mechanoids.

Initially I was always just fully disinterested in Rimworld since I kind of didn't see any worth in it when Dwarf Fortress existed.

I've been playing DF far longer and before rimworld came about. They're fairly different honestly, RW is much smaller scale and personal, like 10 colonists or less. And then there's the whole space/tech theme. DF is an amazing ant farm simulator and is superior in designing cool massive 3D colonies, but I'd say they both have something fun to bring to the table. Give it a try, but don't set the difficulty too low or you'll be bored.

The raids just ramp up inconsistently. With Cass you end up getting 3-4 raids in a row where they slowly ramp up in speed because you don't have enough time to build the wealth to get hard raids. With Phoebe you'll expand too fast by accident and get a SMG raider when your last raider was some bozo with a club so you didn't get free weapons from the last dude.
