Not feeling it so far, cool story though. About an hour and a half in. Playing it for 'free' from xbox live. Does it get better?

Pros
>Great combat
>Fun bosses
>Decent story
>Good art style
Cons
>Map is boring and straightforward. Almost no exploration
>Very little enemy variety
>Unskippable cutscenes
>Mediocre dialogue
I will say that if you don't like the first 90 minutes then stop playing. The rest of the game plays the exact same.

Its a parry game. It is a pretty blunt the game is what it is though gameplay wise. If your not feeling it by the 2nd sol at the latest you should just stop. The is my game of the year and Yi had jumped to be one of the greatest game protags though. This is the part where it truly became S tier.

it does get better past the early game, dont mind 9s fanboys on /v/ theyre a little delusional but hear me out here
later onto the game, it comes up with a more interesting form of parry that isnt just deflectslop and blends well with the normal one into something greater, gives you different forms of talismans, actually interesting jades, etc. the combat genuinely gets better
also, the first hour or so of the game wastes a fuckton of time with repetitive stuff that keeps you away from the action. the game does have a general thing about sinking time with nothingburgers, but its not a big deal past the first hour. so the pacing should get better from now on

>>715569524
my only issue with this topic is that with the enemy movesets, it didnt have to be as a parry game as much as it is:
theres already some interesting moments and gaps in enemy movesets where dodging attacks gives you better opportunies as you can throw out of your own attacks, specially with some jade setups, and that could make it a little less one dimensional instead of always parrying everything. The issue is, as the game was just made with deflects in mind, theres some genuinely terrible hitboxes, which stops you from just standing out of the way of attacks and doing some interesting tricks that you otherwise totally should, which is a shame because it just wastes some potential for not-one-dimensional gameplay that wouldnt affect anyone who prefers to play the pure deflectslop route

Honestly wasn't feeling it right away either despite being a huge fan of metroidvanias/sekiro/souls games but then I got further into it and loved it, I consider it in the same tier as stuff like HK, Blasphemous and Ender Lilies.

I still don't know what the downward dodge jade is used for. It felt like they just want you to use the talismans as much as possible instead.

the downward jade is just gamefeel/fun value. its been pretty much directly lifted from HK where its the same thing
talismans are super huge specially early game. If you dont like them, you can either unlock the talisman that takes less commitment and is just a quick damaging dash, or you can instead get the jades that let you put your qi charges into other uses (like empowered charge attacks)

does it have anything even REMOTELY Interesting GAMEPLAYWISE besides combat? if not. i will not bother. im tired of one dimensional action games masquerading as metroidvanias. Besides, I already have Grime (which I already gave up one) which fundamentally has a more layered and less one dimensional combat system that makes parry more interesting than just a pure "parry" and EVEN then I got tired of the game for being 90% combat. It has glimpses of potential with genuinely cool and unique ability upgrades and platforming, but theyre so short its borderline inconsequential, so I stopped playing it too.

Great combat and bosses
Exploration is meh compared to other metroidvanias but at least that means it doesn't overstay it's welcome
Good story, though a few too many dialogue scenes
Unique and enjoyable art style
10/10 final boss - one of the best I'd fought in a decently long time

I fucked up my collect-a-thon and got locked into the ending. For some reason I had heard of a "point of no return" and thought that there'd be some explicit "are you sure you want to continue?" prompt and got really mad.
Sounds like after I beat the final boss I'll be able to reload right before the tiandao basement though, is that right? I still need to buy all the bow upgrades from kuafu and find an extra chest I missed in the grotto. It honestly ruined half the cutscenes for me so far cause I was just worrying about the shit I'd missed

Though
>a character explicitly tells you that there's no going back
In my defense my entire retardation arose because he DOESN'T, he only implicitly hints that there may be no going back. He does tell you to wrap up unfinished business but just as advice.
I guess it makes sense for a respectful AI assistant who is always deferential and wouldn't want to give Yi orders, and saying "there's no going back" would be a bit gamey. But the game is full of super gamey mechanics anyway.

I hate the whole "respawning is happening in-universe" trope so much. Nine Sus is a great game, but its worst aspects IMO are directly lifted from soulslop for no reason other than that it's popular or maybe that it was in sekiro.
Yes I get that it's kind of explained in the story, but the game STILL manages to fuck it up. Jiequan even references it saying he's not killing Yi because "who knows what root node he'll pop out of", and then in the IMMEDIATE following segment of gameplay you for some fucking reason respawn in a random prison room with zero root nodes. It's not even a segment of "fine here you can't die so we actually reload your save", because you still leave your skull with all your money if you die, so you still die in-world but for some reason resurrect entirely through your own sheer autism or something rather than thanks to the roots. Ridiculous.

And the other thing I don't like is grinding. Both money and experience would have been better served being one-time drops from enemies, so there'd be no incentive to waste time grinding; and it could be calculated so you could 100% the game if you just kill every single enemy exactly once, rewarding thoroughness the first time you go through an area but not forcing you to go mind-numbingly reload the same area for 15 minutes if you happen to lose too many grave runs and end up short on cash at the end of the game.

if you don't like parry mechanics then you'll hate this game
final boss is all but unwinnable if you spent the whole game without mastering the Unbounded Parry

On the second point, I died a lot at the start and then not too much but a couple of times I did put off going to the shop and ended up losing like 5k and 3k on a couple of occasions, and to really stupid deaths too. I'm only a few thousand short, so it's not terrible, but not great.
But I also have the opposite problem: I got every skill point in the game before even finishing the final pre-lab area. Presumably during some of my exploration or going back and forth I actually ended up killing more enemies than "intended". (And it doesn't match my jin because you can't loose full levels, so during my stupid deaths when I'd lose a ton of money I still wouldn't lose much xp.)

Huh. Very odd that you had the opposite experience.

I have to be honest with you. I didn't touch mine either. Held onto every single one. But both you and me forfeit the right to be taken seriously if we grind shekels for 100% completion because we couldn't let go of literaly trash.

I mean it's also supposed to tie in with how Eigong wants to achieve immortality, but having it be there to always be the case does leave some weird plot holes.

It reminds me how in Fire Emblem Three Houses it tries to acknowledge the time rewinding power the protagonist has and shows them using it and showing a case where they use it but still can't change fate, but it doesn't really do a good job explaining why they don't try to do things differently more or why they don't use it in the story more. Sometimes it's just better to not acknowledge certain game mechanics in the story

I haven't beaten her yet so no spoilers if it's post-battle, but as far as I can tell she's insane and thinks her tianhuo mutation is the way to immortality. That doesn't sound very much like Yi's method.
If anything, considering how the roots are depicted as being so closely related to the Tao, fusing with them a la Yi feels to me much more closely related to Lear and Heng's brand of "immortality" so to speak. Eigong's plan seems to be completely the opposite - meddle meddle meddle as much as possible, subvert the natural flow and try to get things done HER way, no matter how retardedly insane.

(Let me know if I'm wrong but again no post-battle spoilers please.)

I still have no idea where his pot is or how I could even break it. (I definitely gave him the clay, I'm pretty sure I got all the collectibles for him, I just don't know where the pot went lmao.)

If you aren't enjoying it by the time you hit the centaur boss, you're probably not going to care for it. If you haven't got to it already, you're likely pretty close.

I personally thought the exploration part of the game was pretty mid. The boss fights and story are the good parts.

What's with this game and sisters? Like the Feng twins you could easily read having incesteous subtext, but they also name the protagonist and his sister after two chinese gods who are married to each other.

It should be on the lower level. It's a very plain red pot. I'm not sure if maybe it stops appearing after he gives Kuafu a pot, but I know whether you smashed it before then changes the dialogue.
