Why are gaming auteurs way more common in Japan than in the West?

There's a noticeable difference between Konami now and Konami back when Hideo Kojima and Koji Igarashi were there.

Credits were much smaller back then and it was easier to notice the people in charge. Meanwhile you play any Rare game from its golden era and you realize that studio had 4+ teams all incubating their own projects with no stand-out names.

I don't think these guys have enough autonomy to be called auteurs.

The auteur shit from Japanese devs is exaggerated for the most part with a few exceptions (Kojima, George Kamitani, etc.). Still, Japanese lead devs do have a lot more creative control over their games than Western devs do because they have more top-down hierarchy, and also "games made by committee" culture is a lot less common in Nipland.
