Zelda 2 is as underappreciated as it is undercooked. I kinda want Nintendo to try their hand at remaking and expanding it Samus Returns style, not gonna lie. They probably won't though.

That was something I thought about too, how a remake of Zelda 2 would be much better than those of Link's Awakening, or the Oracle Zeldas, ect
I would really wish for them to make it a 3D open world game, all of the champion abilities were inspired by spells from Zelda 2

Never say never. Even the niche Famicom Detective Club series got remade and also got a new game in the series.

I really enjoyed the game
I do think it was a bit too cryptic here and there, I had to look up how to advance once or twice at least.
And I simply didn't like how short the swort hitbox is. Feels like you are fighting with a knife.

I wish there had been more room to do "builds." As it is you always end up at 8/8/8 by the end of the game, with the only real difference being how you manipulate your end of palace level ups on the way there

I wish we had a modern game with the same art style and especially color pallette. I feel modern games are afraid to use simple but well detailed scenery and bold colors that NES games used.

I like it. It really didn't hold back on what type of color it wanted to be, giving a very sharp contrast. And well sprites were often more simple geometry, they were usually made quite crisp to give a them more depth. Modern games, especially new Zelda by contrast, uses softer shapes and especially softer textures, with more muted colord.

This is true, but you do get used to it after a while and you do also get a lot of spells to help you out.
I guess I wouldn't be against a new sword about halfway in though, if only because it's a nice way to provide a progress indicator.

Castlevania 2 is bad. Far from the worst of what the era has to offer, but still bad. It functions fine. But the combat is bad, the level design is bad, the enemies are bad, and the exploration is bad. It's a very ambitious game for its time, and probably is responsible for the existence of the later metroidvania games. It's not absolutely ireedeemable, but it's definitely not good compared to CV 1 or 3, or games like Faxanadu.
Zelda 2 is good though. The only issue it has is people being filtered by its difficulty which isn't even that high. And yeah, the sword feeling so short is a bit lame like others have said, but you can get used to that.

CV2 is also just boring though. It looks and sounds and feels pretty nice, but the shit you actually do in the game is fucking boring.
There is no challenge other than parsing the nonsense spouted by NPCs and some tricky jumps in the mansions, but the punishment for dying is nothing, so there is never any tension.
Bosses are also a joke, even without abusing sub-weapons. It's like they weren't programmed correctly and only had half their arsenal available.
Game is boring. But, just like with Zelda 2, I really appreciate that they tried something different and a lot of the elements found in CV2 and Zelda 2 alike carried over into more refined sequels, so it wasn't a waste.

Nintendo tried remaking it once but decided to make a new game fairly early on.

you are now aware of why Ocarina of Time has combat mechanics the way it does.

the semi random encounters were tedious as fuck. Standing still still spawned mobs. Walking in forest triggered random encounters on top. Getting hit on a road still triggered a battle with no enemy in it for crying out loud...
And until you got the healing spell and enough mana most of the time is spent grinding xp and going back to town to heal. Combat is really frustrating until you get the upward/downward thrust.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone, whether they're trying Zelda 2 for the first time or going back for a replay.

The only way to lose at CV2 was to quit playing. Death was an inconvenient loss of currency, but you were always put back exactly where you died. The hardest challenge in the game is finding where you need to go.

My mind was blown watchin Vinny play that. To me, that's what a remake should be. Not just a face lift for graphics, but the content added, the way they retooled some of the rooms, turned the fairy spell into the cuckoo spell, and on and on. I couldn't fucking believe that playthrough. The gold standard, the dev clearly understood what the game was about and leaned into it.

Gen x here.
People loved C2 for its music and atmosphere. And it was a group effort trying to figure it out. Every day, people would arrive at school/work and swap tips with each other about what they had discovered in the previous night's play session.

All that shit is lost nowdays but it was absolutely amazing fun to play it when it first came out.

>Castlevania 2 is bad.
It's not. Not even close to being a bad game.
I recommend you try some actual bad games some time, it will give you a whole new perspective on things.
For bad NES games Go try Dragon's Lair, or Waynes World, or Conan.

Your opinion of castlevania 2 will instantly go up to at the very least a 6/10 or 7/10.

Palaces as a whole were the redeeming part of the game. Battle music was good too but you got to hear it so many times it ended up being fucking grating.
