Gaming, to this day, still hasn't surpassed it.
No indie dev would even consider making their own music format, game engine, their own art, and polish it all until it's perfect. No AAA dev would ever make anything that isn't a vapid skinner box. Nobody understands pixel's methodology or has his commitment to a project. Nobody in gaming had the love for programming like he did.

Gaming, and society as a whole, peaked here, and it has all been downhill ever since.

Goddamn this looks kino. I read the Wikipedia article and this guy was fucking dedicated. He started developing it on his own in 1993.

>No indie dev would even consider making a kino game, then selling those rights to your game away, therefore shelving what would be the sequel to the kino that you just made, therefore turning you off from game development entirely
The first thing you should do as a game dev is hire a lawyer, kids

Cave Story is a jumping-and-shooting action game. Explore the caves until you reach the ending. You can also save your game and continue from where you left off.

Pixel is an absolute madman, he made indie solodev look easy. A generation of indies saw Cave Story and thought "Hey, I can do that too!", until they realized they actually couldn't.

I respect Cave Story but I genuinely don't think it's that good of a game.
And the whole play-perfect be-perfect kind of weapons/power system, is honestly more annoying and dissatisfying than not.

I'd rather the game would just kill and force me to restart than to weaken me and make the game unfun.

Don't forget the part where you talk to a sad onion in a shack and then get launched halfway across the map by a toaster. Peak game design, I swear.

I started up this game again recently on a whim, and it's a blast. The story is kind of underbaked, but it's not a problem usually

Pretty much any rogue like has as much love and effort or even more so put into it. Cave story is just the best known and has good art which translates to good marketing.

It's easy to design levels on a flat 2d plane that goes from left to right up and down vs infinite XYZ coordinates. I liked the developers of Shadow complexs talk on how they designed their games for anyone reading this is interested and wants to look it up.

Just a different design philosophy, sure most of the time a designed map is probably better but for roguelikes that would fly in the face of the entire point of the genre , infinite replayability

Yeah, it's bad for rouge lites, but is still better no matter what. That sidemode calling itself a genre is shitty. It's just gambling.
