This game was really magical for its time
Any game that made you feel that way?
Feel what way? Do you remember a random battle every two steps as well?
>>715611721 (OP)why the fuck is there no re release till this day?
>>715612003Thereโs a mobile version and a 3DS version with new content.
>>715611857FFVII, one of the best game ever had that too
>>715611721 (OP)I fapped many times to Jessica in a bunny suit. God damn good times.
>>715611721 (OP)Ni no Kuni, kind of. It wasn't a great game.
>>715612105And neither have the same production value as the original.
>>715611721 (OP)>for its timewhat causes people to say this?
>>715612105they're both ass although
>>715611721 (OP)It was extremely magical when it first released and I think for first-timers playing it these days it would still feel magical
>>715612003Because all of them play the same retard. No point to doing specific rereleases.
>>715611721 (OP)it's mediocre as hell compared to V
>>715611721 (OP)I love how great it looks on emulators
Although I can't really get into playing it no matter how much I try
>>715611857the 3ds version
>>715612105 is so goated just for not having this, being able to walk around random encounters, or only take a fight if it's an enemy you actually want, makes the game 10x better
the other new content i didn't particularly care for, and the graphics/ost are tragic compared to ps2, but man was it a sovlfvl game
>>715616365did you try emu'ing the 3ds version? i liked the original on release but after playing 3ds once i never replay the original
>>715611721 (OP)Im playing this right now but Im taking a break cause I just finished XI. I got the fourth character and after I saw that he is a healbot with woosh spell I said "enough I need a break from this pattern" and started playing sultans game.
>>715616773It really isnโt and I played it after 8, 5 has some incredible moments
The 3ds version sucks
>>715611857It made the world feel bigger and dangerous. Tendie babies need to fuck off from dq8 and stop bringing up the disaster that the 3ds version truly is.
"Duuuur what if in half life you activated noclip and avoided encounters instead of playing?"
It's fucking dumb, immensely retarded. It breaks the design of the game and makes finding the big saber tooth companion less impactful. I spit on this port of the game and the faggots defending it.
>>715618140delicious seethe
*maxes my entire party on metal slimes in a couple hours with encounter manipulation that isn't possible on ps2*
it has the best "pieces of the puzzle start fitting together" scenario for me. how you figure out why the mc is actually special, how his relationship with the princess is ordained by fate, how the charmles trial actually became your trial without you knowing it and you ended up fulfilling all the requirements and birthrights of the throne due to it.
>>715618275woah so much fun, sure I'm seething over there.
what I'm seething at is the impact the pedotendie 3ds has on this game and how new players didn't get to experience the highs of going through a difficult dungeon and roaming the map managing your ressources and feeling in actual danger. You didn't play the real DQ8 dipshit and the more you talk about the pretendo turd ds version the more people are going to miss out on the superior version.
I played both btw.
>>715618606i did play the original when it came out, the 3ds version is better, making a 40 hour game in to a 100 hour game through pointless tedium is not virtuous, seethe retard
>>715611857>>715611938>>715615470spot the guy who had a gamecube in his childhood
>>715618275thats sort of the problem. when i played the 3ds version, encounter rate became an encounter suggestion since i could avoid every single "random" battle with no difficulty. i had to start walking into enemies myself cause i was getting no exp.
>>715618909dragon quest games are memes for battle exp in general, you get barely any exp from regular battles, but shitloads of exp from metal slimes
like in dq8 specifically it's easiest, fastest and most palatable in general, to just only level up at the ruined abby, castle trodain, and then possibly the slime island, the cave i can't remember the name of, or the slime hill
>>715619114seethe retard
>>715617292>5 has some incredible momentsExactly, it's held up almost entirely for it's story.
>>715611721 (OP)Getting Pokemon Red when it first came out. I

>>715619224We're going from "being able to sidestep all encounters in dq8 isn't a problem and not taking away anything from the game" to "grinding metal slimes is the only part you need to get invested into and the rest of the game can be skipped" so now I'm quite certain this brown nigger has steam in his skull with one overcooked bean at the center.
This is my least favorite dq just because every fight up until the gold golems is literally 30-40g in rewards
The game actually expects you to grind out alchemy at every new town just to afford one axe for yangus
>>715619224i think the issue i have with it was that ps2 version had its encounter rate irritatingly high, so when the 3ds implements a system that essentially disables the encounters outright, its a method that treats the encounter mechanic like a tumor to be removed rather than a mechanic to be modernized.
>>715619251It's not like any of these games have great gameplay
>>715619619Hope you got inertia/shock dampeners inside your bean bone chamber
>>715611721 (OP)i like it, but it's an oldschool SNES JRPG in everything but graphics.
if you like old JRPGs, you'll like VIII.
Am I just not playing correctly or is the grind before you can beat a boss or move to a new area a must.
>>715619791again, thats my point. in ps2, holy water exists because encounters exists. in 3ds, holy water exists cause... cause uhhhh...
>>715620035sort of, you can avoid the grind for the first couple bosses, but you need to know what abilities are worth taking if you want to do that
once you get past the 2nd main boss though you will need to levelup, and that's when you just grind metal slimes because exp rates in dq games are ridiculously low
>>715619843I think most DQ gameplay is actually very well designed, but V is among the weaker games. It's not bad by any means, just not peak of the series like a lot of people here think.
>>715620035Of course it is. It's old school. First visit to a new area is usually a skull caving blow with a police baton. On ps2 anyway. And getting to bosses was an endurance run.
Unlike some version where you play shitty Pac-Man/MGS with monsters.

t. lover of all DQ kino but especially 5
I really like Dragon Quest 8. I played Dragon Quest as a child but never got far in them, let alone beat them. The farthest I got was Dragon Quest Monsters but it was on an emulator which let you cheat with save states and rewind, although I was pretty young so I don't even think I did rewinding. The GameBoy Color had tons of remakes of the original Dragon Quest games but they were too difficult for my young self. DQ Monster was way better than Pokemon but none of my school friends played it so I dropped it and with it, Dragon Quest overall.
Fast forward to high school, a relative gave me gift card to an exclusive entertainment store. They had a limited selection of games but out of all of them Dragon Quest 8 was the best next to the shovelware selection. Now I can't remember if it had a demo disc of FF12, its been a while. Boy, what a choice that was. Fantastic game, very *very* high presentation values. At the time of release you have to remember that open world games weren't a thing on consoles, besides the Xbox classic. The PS2 being able to render that type of world with a day/night cycle genuinely blew my mind away, it was always the weaker console and everyone knew it next to GameCube multiplatforms.
The orchestra soundtrack was sublime. The voice acting was top-notch, it was cast by British TV actors and the London symphony if I remember this correctly. I don't think DQ8 ever became a Greatest Hits in USA or Europe, which is a damn shame considering how high quality it was. The first time you enter a cave the protagonist pulls out a torch, tiny details like this go a long way to establishing immersion and atmosphere. After DQ8 I reconnected with the franchise and got Dragon Quest Swords and went back to the DS DQ5 and got DQ9. The 3DS version fixed the major glaring issue, not being able to marry Jessica. Tons of quality of life changes like on-screen encounters. Just an overall 10/10 JRPG. The heart of DQ8's story lies in the father daughter tragedy.
>>715620289This would be a good retort if Boss Baby set the standard for it's genre.
>>715612105Didnt you need to connect to a buggy weekly server to get some of the new features? I remember missing something because it went down to a two hour window shortly after release instead of the full week, and I missed it.
Why is nobody mentioning that the 3DS version looks like ass
>>715620035Original or 3DS? The 3DS version makes grinding a non-issue since returning players know where the metal slimes spawns are and how to farm them. The original can be pretty tricky only at the start, the first few hours will be tough. Once you get Jessica and land on the second continent you should be able to clear areas without having to worry about the grind. The natural progression is fine for the most part if you don't run away from battles on the PS2. The 3DS you just have to keep in mind you should grind if you avoided battles for a long time or even better if you know where metal slimes spawns you can spend the least amount of time grinding lol.
>>715620715everyone always mentions that, it looks and sounds like ass, everyone wishes we got a proper port that didn't
at least we've got mods now
>>715611721 (OP)I played through the entire game and felt like it overstayed it's welcome by about a half an hour for every single step of story, and the climax points were just "lets follow around a clown man for 80 hours". I'm playing XI right now and even knowing a plot twist is coming up after the end of part 2 I still feel it is exactly metered and measured to remain fresh but also not feel rushed. VIII felt like the unfinished prototype of XI, it was probably around a 7.5/10 game so by no means "awful", but it had a lot of glaring flaws like pacing and *gets ambushed and full party wiped before you can move*.

>>715620508>The 3DS version fixed the major glaring issue, not being able to marry Jessica.Alright the shitendo 3ds port gets a pass
Yeah, dragon warrior 4 for the NES made me feel that way. It was the first RPG that I managed to beat as a kid. It took me a year since I had no help and the world wide web barely existed at the time so I couldn't look up a walkthrough.
>>715611721 (OP)Elden Ring, unironically.
>Harpies that just play with their vocal cords>Seeing a walking masoleum the first time>map expands seemingly endlessly outward and downward>giants roaming roads with chariots hooked into them>Every demigod fight memorable>every frame is a paintingItโs just a fantastic culmination of Fromโs output since DeS.
>>715620508>I don't think DQ8 ever became a Greatest Hits in USA or EuropeThere was a platinum release, which I think is the Europe equivalent.
>>715621285Yeah I got that one. Once again EuroCHADS show unquestionable superiority over ameridumbs
>>715620508>Now I can't remember if it had a demo disc of FF12, its been a while.ye the demo where you could see wildsaurians on phon coast, i still remember it to this day, i see dinosaur, i buy
>>715621017That was only because their voice actors got married in real life.
