Double jumps are useful, but dashes are cooler. It's fun to speed up and try to retain your momentum from a dash, and it can lead to cool movement tech like dash jumping in Mega Man X/Zero. That's not mentioning the i-frames you get from a dash, air dashes, and shit like the shinespark from Super Metroid or the crystal dash from Hollow Knight. Double jumps are just a supplementary mechanic to grounded jumps, and the most they can do is give you a bit more height off a jump or extend your air time.

For me, it's the L button.
I like double tapping, but eventually you'll get to inconvenient situations where the L button will be superior. Also, dashing wall jumps are impossible with double tapping.

The dash sound effect in x4 is so good, bros. The one in x8 is kinda meh, I mean it serves it's purpose. But the x4 sfx is imprinted into my brain, I can instantly imagine it.

Is it though? Like when you get a dash most of the game is spent holding the dash button down because faster is better. What makes having a dash better then just moving faster.

Now if the game has actual momentum dashing gets complicated. But in the x games momentum doesn't exist aside from armored armadillo's stage.

Momentum does exist in the X games? A lot of the jumps and platforming takes the dash into account. My biggest peeve though is having to hold the attack button to charge the X shot, I think the x5 improvement patch had an option to auto charge it for you, it was really good. My index finger starts hurting in long play-sessions

No, hold on. Mid air jumps are rarely pushed. But you usually get one 'fall off under an obstacle and jump up' or 'reverse direction mid air to climb vertically' scenario.

No, momentum doesnt, when you dash, the player movement speed is increased, but you can always turn around in mid air retaining that speed. The only time momentum is actually applied is the carts in armored armadillo's stage, where you can combine the speed of the cart into your jump.

I thought the Zero series' movement and combat were incredibly fluid and fun, and I started with MMX. The only issue is the GBA's small screen size, which makes it difficult to see what's ahead of you. I urge you to give it another shot. MMZ is a fairly short game all things considered, unless you go for S rank or try to collect and evolve all the cyber elves.

Momentum does exist in X, but you're right that dashing doesn't use it. i think there are some ice slopes in one of the X games that also affect your momentum iirc.
