Because nintendo has games, so that leaves microsoft vs sony. Sony has just happened to win, I feel like it was death of 1000 cuts, rather than something specific.

Terrible leadership structure that is conducive for developing PC infrastructure and cloud servers, but is not the type of executive structure that leads to creative and artistic games. Halo was largely a fluke and Gears was largely an Epic game. Forza was their legit only consistent in house series for over a decade. Poor decision-making, terrible contract job structure, and not being able to read the room killed them. So they decided to just become a bigger Sega, which is a really nihilist route when you think about it. Buying up all these studios, shutting them down, holding onto all these series that will never see a new game, and just shitting out a new cod every year to keep the masses happy. Really grim.

After the 360 they lost a lot of good will after they announced the Xbox one was gonna have some bull shit features alongside the rise of YouTube people started to make videos about shitty things they did during the xbox/360 era like charge for the L4D2 dlc and how they basically killed rare. To top it all off despite the ps4 not having many exclusives the Xbox one had even less add in brand loyalty to Sony in certain countries and no cross-platform at the time it made ps4 the console to get

It did perfectly fine at first, the OG Xbox beat the Gamecube which is an impressive performance for a new player on the market, the 360 even beat the PS3 until later in the lifecycle when Sony got their shit together.

Imo the point when it was fucked was when they went full kinect, started pandering to a casual audience, stopped releasing fun games. Then the Xbone was a continuation of that, they wanted to make a console for people who don't play video games and assumed gamers will come anyway.

More recently during the launch of the Series X Microsoft managed to regain alot of the goodwill lost and was in a good spot to at least sell decently but they blew it away, their strategy was to buy studios and do nothing with them, Halo Infinite was a disaster, all of their "exclusives" are garbage that nobody wants to play. Gamepass is a terrible idea for video games, when you dump a bunch of games for "free" people don't care about them as much, it devalues them, and from the developer side it definitely had a negative effect on quality because why even try if it's gonna end up on Xbox dumping ground and Microsoft will pay for it anyway?

Going all in on Kinect was what did them in. They tried to out Nintendo with the casual friendly "your body is a controller" approach but they released a fucking Eyetoy+ (something Playstation did as a gag 10 years prior) and they just kept tripling down on it despite it just being a neat gimmick for a holiday season or two

It was Kinect, but also the always online stuff and paying to play used games. I don’t think there was a single part of that conference that people liked.

OG Xbox had too much soul and too much controller for the Japanese. Unfortunately it had some terrible, terrible leadership. RE4 was almost an Xbox exclusive but the gaijin laughed at whoever directed that.

People forget how absolutely annihilated they got by Sony with their "this is how you share games on PlayStation" counter ad. MS was the laughing stock of the Internet for the entire Xbone launch and had to pack peddle pretty much everything they went all in on that E3

Most games were available for PC. That was fine when consoles could actually play the games, but consoles fell behind PC in the 7th generation. There was no chance of success after that.

Kinect + chasing casuals. They had the hardcore gamer crowd and they wanted the Nintendo crowd but they lost the hardcore crowd forever doing that and the Nintendo crowd is fickle as fuck, even Nintendo loses them sometimes like the Wii U.

Most people don't care about PC and want a cheap box they can put under their TV that will play the latest games. It doesn't make sense for the guy who only cares about CoD, Fifa and the occasional AAA slop to build a PC when a console is cheaper and gets the job done.
