I like safe haven areas in vidya โ€“ small comfy places amidst hostile environments. Like snugly well illuminated save rooms in some dingy godforsaken shitholes, or cozy lodges during snowstorms, or secure item fountain rooms amidst tough-going levels. Theyโ€™re often accompanied by calming elements like soft music or warm lighting that contrast with the chaos outside, which makes them very comfy.
Sometimes thereโ€™s just a room without any particular purpose where the enemies donโ€™t attack you. In real life, Iโ€™d just stay in that room and refuse to move forward.

Very true OP, but its such a rare and niche feel to capture right.

In the past few years, I've only felt it in Minecraft GTNH, where the nights are pitch black and I was hiding in my little stone age hut, fireplace cooking meat, leathers drying on the wall, just organizing stuff in my drawers, when I peeked out into the darkness and saw monsters moving before the moon over the horizon. The juxtaposition between my safe, cozy little hut, built into a cliff and only accessible by ladder, food and water and reading material available and the grim, dark wilderness out there, unknowable and full of death was so great.

RE7 is great. It's one of the more innovative REs and hardcore difficulty is legit. And it doesn't ruin or demake anything but does its own thing.

This thread is just your daily reminder that good games haven't been made for about 20 years.
Even simple joys like a cool little cozy safe room in a game is something that doesn't exist in any game outside of some Resident Evil remake.
Video games suck so fucking much.
>no safe rooms
>no cool hub
>no cool OST
>no tetris inventory
>no dismemberment
>no physics
>no stencil shadows
>no cool unique save system
>no unique UI
>no weird experimental shit like damage being displayed on your body or no HUD
>no cool maps and landmarks to navigate the world, only quest markers
>no unique or slow means of travel, only fast travel
it's over

This makes me sad. It's very obvious games are now 100% products designed like you would design a car and have lost every last bit of soul. Even indies are now doing the same thing.

Not all of these games have save rooms per se but they do have well defined areas of safety versus areas of danger. The Long Dark is probably my favorite of the bunch in regards to this, especially after the safehouse customization update, but I do hate some aspects of the balancing and tedium it makes you go through in any run lasting longer than a couple months.
