I don't think today's audience can handle an actual mmo (that isn't baby proofed with guardrails everywhere basically defeating the purpose of an mmo)

The problem of MMOs will always be what managers and marketers think that player's want out of an MMO.
The beating heart of an MMO is ultimately just a thinly disguised trucking/hauling sim with multiplayer.
