Lately it seems like Nintendo just keeps pumping out hit after hit, but that wasn't the case in this era. Why's that?

It was their first HD console, and by their own admission they had no experience on how to develop HD games properly. Even the spec choices of the Wii U reflect that.

They wanted to continue the success of the Wii by using a poor naming scheme, in reality it made people think it was an add-on that was way too expensive.

Gimmick just wasn't that interesting.
Didn't help all the good games came out on the later half of its life cycle, when the Xbone and PS4 were what kids were asking for Christmas.

Kept getting mistaken for an accessory for the Wii. That's why the newest Switch has a giant 2 next to it.

Accidently typed U instead of 2 when naming it and Nintendo being Japanese no one told the guy he made a massive mistake.

Yes.
Journos calling it a wii peripheral also made it worse.

This and the Wii was a fad that had already died. The masses are stupid which is why things named 2, 3, 4, etc. are the most effective. So many people thought this was a (uninteresting) screen accessory for the Wii. My Nintendo-loving cousin didn’t know what the Wii U even was and wasn’t interested in it. So it alienated many Nintendo fans, it failed to attract to casuals who were content with playing Wii Sports Bowling in the original, and the specs kept gamers away from it. It wasn’t cheap either. The negative word of mouth on the internet sealed its fate. It was a bad idea they probably came up with to translate the 2nd screen concept of the DS to a console… but they came up with the idea before the iPad came out and while smart phones were warming up. It was outdated in so many ways when it came out. The first party games were good though but couldn’t save it… and they ported most of them to Switch including MK8 and probably made at least a couple billion off them in the end

It was because of 3DS
They spread themselves too thin
They thought they could do it like in the past but development times increased over time and supporting two systems became too much
They even tried putting some titles on both Wii U and 3DS to mitigate this problem

the ps3 had a million games
and they sold Wii U's with 8gb for the OS so no one bought one, they were expecting like 256gbs to download games
