"Desensitize" never made sense. Media is far more gory and violent now than it was decades ago, yet people are much more sensitive to real world violence.
In the past, people in general were dealing with far worse real world violence in their everyday lives, while old media was much more sanitized.
If anything, it's the opposite - an intent to make people more sensitive. The aggressive boost in violence in entertainment is meant to illusion people, so that when they're hit with a portrayal of actual violence, it shocks them even harder and elicits a more manipulatable emotional reaction.
You could liken it to the useless women's self defense classes. They're given an inflated ego and an illusion of strength, only for it to backfire on them when they are put in a situation that shows it was all worthless. Do most of them smarten up, buy a gun and rely on their man for protection? Just the opposite; most want weapons banned harder and become even more anti-man.
