I don't remember which video or what exactly he said but knowing him it was probably something along the lines of, if you paid 10 bucks back in the day you'd get a whole ass new chunk of the game, you pay 10 bucks now and you get 20 minutes of content or else worthless cosmetics and a handful of new items

It was his Dungeon Siege video and he's kinda right on that. Expansion packs typically were just additional campaigns that lasted as long as the OG game or something comparable to it, yet were about half the price of the OG game.

There are some DLCs that do hand out a lot of content or are reasonably priced for what they are, but most are just cosmetic shit that could either be free or cheap yet they either cost as much as and expansion pack would or the publishers nickel and dime you for a complete set of items. Or it could just be an hour long side scenario that also costs way too much for what it is.

If anyone has that ancient picture of the difference between expansion packs and DLC with the Mona Lisa, it illustrates the concept perfectly.

Boomer skill issue. Minerva's Den was $10 and almost as good as Bioshock 2's campaign. Most expansion packs from back then couldn't even dream of being this good.

Uh, no it isn't. Ross is specifically talking about 90's and maybe early 2000's expansion packs.

The last triple A company releasing a DLC that could be called expansion that I remember is Nintendo with Mario Kart 8, the original one had a DLC that added around 50% more tracks, and then in deluxe the DLC doubled the tracks.
Kinda funny how they did a 180ยบ with the last one with the horrendous price

Yeah, if he's hoping to get anything done about DLC as a model, that's not going to happen. That's entrenched and not functionally different asides from the method of acquisition.

When is the last time a game had a proper expansion? Maybe The Witcher 3?
