The main fault of the original is that it runs at 50 fps, so you might get jittery framerates unless you set your monitor's refresh rate to a multiple of 50
Other than that it's the best, the fan translation is better, more sincere and less meme-y than the official Nicalis one. If you have autism you could try to dig up some of the decompilations that add variable refresh rate and fix some other quirks but it's no big deal.

There's obviously Kero Blaster, which is in some very specific ways better than Cave Story.
But, other than that, it does seem strange that there weren't a big wave of story-driven shoot 'em ups like that.
Braid and Super Meat Boy both spawned a ton of puzzle-platformers and ''sadistic'' platformers, so I don't know what happened there.
Maybe Cave Story was just a bit early to really catch on, despite still being massively popular.

People like Cave Story because it was one of the pioneers of indie games as a whole, while also being a solid game on top of that. You gotta remember that everything in Cave Story (from the art, music and even the engine itself) were all created by ONE guy, which considering its scope was practically unheard of in 2004. The original is the best. I really don't like the art direction of the later versions. It also had a neat PSP port that I played a bunch of. The game has a good mixture of story, combat, and exploration.

The game also has a very bleak atmosphere, and although the characters aren't super well developed, they are interesting. I do prefer the fan translation over the "official" translation, as well, for this reason. I think the fan translation has more personality, and in a game this thinly plotted that really helps.

Finally played this a couple months ago before Deltarune and its good but its pretty rough to play nowadays. The controls are kind of clunky and I was lost a couple of times because it wasn't very obvious where I was supposed to go. Apparently you can just download Cave Story right in RetroArch, it's right in the content folder and then just use the NXEngine core.

Literally 100% of the games I play and programs I use are designed for 60Hz screens. I don't need more. It's not a matter of money. I'm actually looking to buy a new monitor and I'm willing to spend as much as it takes, but they're full of retardations like 240Hz HDR meme features.

No, when I set vsync to just on, the framerate is horrible and there is noticeable input lag (probably due to the low frame rate). The game doesn't run properly. I'm not the kind of retard who seethes about muh input lag because of vsync.
The original freeware version with a widescreen mod literally doesn't have this problem.

I've pretty much 100%'d the steam version. Here's my gripes with it:

Even if you literally only play 60fps games, you still want a monitor over 60fps for lower lag and some refresh-rate overhead for v-sync so you don't have any lag or tearing from having it near refresh-rate. Some games work fine with 60Hz, tons of games do not and will give you screen tearing or excessive lag with 60Hz fixed refresh rate. With 120hz or 240hz, you literally never have that issue.

Only the cutscenes are bad and he even went back and updated those a few years back. The actual sprites are fine, it's just Out of this World filtered through Swedish autism and a 15 year old build of Blender.
