>No, you don't understand
>The developer made the player act a certain way because they wanted to tell a story!
Ok, you can "tell a story" and still give the player full control of how the story unfolds and how it ends.
Why don't more games give the player freedom over the actual story?

Because "muh freedom" often comes at the expense of being fucking shit because you stretch the good parts too much.
I'd rather have a linear story that is good, same reason I'd prefer a linear game that is tight and focused and good over the same good parts stretched over an open world with 10x the padding.

BG3 doesn't belong here, it gives the player complete freedom while tying them to a handful of narrative anchor points, like rpgs in the 80s and 90s. No two bg3 playthroughs will ever be exactly the same between different individuals by virtue of how many permutations there are. The other games don't do this at all.

that's why it's in the center, anon. It's the gold standard for high-budget high-freedom games.

Linear exploration games >>>>>>>>>>>>>

infinitely more memorable and impactful, also require a lot more skill and thought to craft than open world blender brush painted map of slop

Nah. It's just as easy to do a linear game without any "craft" put into it.

This type of videogame design is pretty hard. There is a reason why most videogame studios go for the linear games approach.

Item descriptions in those games tell the background in the worst way possible and there's no way it tells us the motivation for the few npcs that they bothered to create.

Why is VtMB there?
There's one instance where La'Croix mindcontrols you, but other than that, the choices are yours.
