I never played a MMO game
I heard good things about Phantasy Star Online 2
Is there a story mode? does the game have an end? or is it endless battle in random generated map?

Whatever you heard, it was in past tense. The game is nothing like it used to be and was killed off by Sega in favor of some open world slop that isn't even really open world.

PSO2 can still be played with all the single player campaigns with AI teammates, it's just attached to the tumor known as New Genesis

The first PSO is playable on a private server, but its definitely a relic and difficult to get into if you "weren't there".

If you've never played an MMO before I guess a better question is what do you normally play and why are you suddenly interested in MMOs and how much jank are you willing to put up with because this is the genre of pure jank and miles of technical debt.

I dont know there are 1 billion free games on steam and ps5 that are "MMO" and most of the time I read they are totally free and the only purchase options are cosmetics
So basically a free game since I wouldnt spend money on skins
What is their endgame? I mean what is the goal of games like Guild Wars? the game and its expansions are totally free, so how come devs make so much money?

Every free MMO is pay to win. You have to pay money for basic things like inventory slots.

old PSO2 does, theres a final mission and a boss and the story ends
current PSO2:NGS does not end, and the devs seem to have no direction and are milking it for gacha atm

Not really, "p2w" is a common issue in the vast majority of MMOs, especially korean ones.
Premium accounts, equipment protection, enhancement rates, theres to many systems in too many games all shat up by RNG and they sell you better rates on it.

Extremely few MMOs are both free to play and don't contain any pay to win mechanics. We've been dancing this dance of trying to find a game with proper balance for decades.

If you want a free MMO find a private server for something like PSO, Everquest, FFXI, or right now /vm/ is playing SMT Imagine together.

Depends what you want.
Both SWTOR and LOTRO are free to play, high quality, story focused, and extremely comfy realisations of classic settings.

So you want to play an MMO?

>Story
WoW, FF14, or your typical Theme Park MMO. They're basically single player games where you do quests to progress a story.
>Freedom, sandbox, PVP
Albion or Eve. Basically the same games except one is fantasy and one is spaceships. You do a basic short tutorial and are left free to do whatever you want sort of like Diablo 2 or something. Farm gear, make money, kill people, team up with friends etc.
>Level grind
FFXI on a private server. You log on, you team up with 5 randoms (ie: retards) and you kill enemies for 4-6 hours for the night, you get maybe 1 or 2 levels. You log off ready to do it all again tomorrow
>Gear grind
Does killing 10,000 enemies of the same type for a 0.01% drop chance item for an enchant sound fun? Play Ragnarok Online. Basically every Korean MMO is like this and you can tell cuz the women look really slutty and the damage numbers are stupidly huge for no reason.
>MMOFPS
ever wanted to play Battlefield but with 1000 people instead of 40? Planetside 2 or something, but it lags like fuck.

not that anon but it's a bit of a rabbit hole.
First of all, if you play for the story, there is nothing of value there.
The leveling is an afterthought process by now. The gameplay loop is running in literal literal circles attacking mobs that usually stand still and just respawn to gather trash loot which then you sell for silver. You attack have various effects that don't actually matter in PVE at at all so it's just about killing mobs as fast as possible while have loot drop amount scrolls active. In this process you carry weight increases because of the trash loot and you gear gets damaged and needs repairs. To pick up loot fast enough without standing around and maximing gains (loot scroll timer is ticking down) you need multiple pets and enhance them via rng upgrade system using more pets (and you can only use pets of the same type). They cost money. 60$ tents you can place allow you to repair gear without leaving the grindspot which someone else might occupy when you leave.
Then gear enhancing requires loads of money/material and a RNG method that eventually downgrades your gear when fail. You end up with having to farm 10h for a single click on enhance that has a 5% chance. Accessoirs don't downgrade, they get destroyed instead. Buying skins allows you to break them into a currency that protects your gear from downgrading or getting destroyed. Costumes cost around 20$ (and can be sold on the player market).

Exactly. That sterile LED blue wash is soul-draining. You swap that out with a warm Edison bulb and suddenly it feels like a Kikujiro summer night. Add the hum of the fan, faint cicadas outside, CRT glow in the corner, and you're not gaming-youโ€™re meditating.
